Cardinals signed RHP Brad Penny to a one-year, $7.5 million contract.
The deal was officially announced by manager Tony La Russa on Tuesday. Penny, 31, can earn close to $9 million through performance-based incentives on the one-year contract. He posted a 4-1 record and 2.59 ERA in 2009 after returning to the National League and should only bolster a St. Louis rotation that already boasts Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports the Cardinals have agreed to terms with Brad Penny on a one-year, $7.5 million.
Penny can earn close to $9 million through performance-based incentives. The base salary seems a bit high, but the Cardinals are obviously banking on him returning to the form he once showed as a National Leaguer. The 31-year-old Penny posted a 4-1 record and a 2.59 ERA this past season after joining up with the Giants. He'll help solidify a rotation in St. Louis that already includes Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Brad Penny's potential one-year deal with the Cardinals could be worth up to $9 million through incentives.
Chances are the base salary will fit in around $5 million. It's a deal that makes sense for both sides. Penny, 31, has dealt with a few injuries in the past few years and will be given a shot on a contending team to re-establish his value. The right-hander finished the 2009 season with an 11-9 record, 4.88 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. He went 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA with the Giants.

According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News, the Cardinals are nearing a deal with free agent Brad Penny.
Penny flourished once he returned to the National League this past season and the Cardinals are banking on that success continuing. He should do well under the tutelage of St. Louis pitching coach Dave Duncan and brings a little more fire to a rotation that already features Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright. The 31-year-old Penny went 11-9 with a 4.88 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 2009 and 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA once he arrived in San Francisco.

Free agents Brad Penny and Juan Uribe turned down recent contract offers from the Giants, according to Joan Ryan of MLB.com.
Penny was offered a one-year deal last week while Uribe was offered one-year with an option earlier this week. "At this time I'm not sure there will be further discussion," general manager Brian Sabean said. Sabean also added that Bengie Molina was "probably" offered a multi-year deal by another team, all but guaranteeing that he will not return to San Francisco.

Brad Penny hurled a complete-game six-hitter in a 4-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night.
One thing we know: Brad Penny likes the National League. He went 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA over six starts since being signed by the Giants on August 31. He finishes the year at 11-9 with a 4.88 ERA over 30 starts. Penny would prefer to play for a West Coast team next season, so re-signing with the Giants makes sense.
