Alyson Footer of MLB.com reports that the Astros have hired Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills as their new manager.
Houston offered the job to Manny Acta before he decided to go to Cleveland instead, and the other finalists were said to be interim manager Dave Clark and former manager Phil Garner. A former big league infielder who played with the Expos from 1980-1983, Mills spent over a decade managing in the minors before joining the Red Sox's staff in 2004. His son, Beau Mills, was the Indians' first-round pick in 2007.

Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports that Manny Acta turned down an offer to manage the Astros.
Acta was hired by the Indians on Sunday. The Astros reportedly offered him two years with an one-year option, while the Indians gave him three years plus an option. With Acta no longer an option, Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills and former Astros manager Phil Garner have become the favorites for the position.

Former Astros manager Phil Garner was interviewed Saturday afternoon for the club's open managing position.
The Astros fired Garner in August of 2007, but are apparently willing to give him another shot. "This is a different scenario now," he said Saturday. "That's why I decided to put my name in the hat and see if there's a fit here." Garner is the seventh of 10 candidates to interview for the gig.
