A.J. Burnett allowed six earned runs in two-plus innings Monday as the Yankees dropped Game 5 of the World Series to the Phillies.
Burnett showed a lack of control from the opening pitch and the Phillies took advantage. He could not locate his fastball or curve and wound up walking four hitters against two strikeouts. Just 28 of his 53 pitches were strikes before he was lifted with no outs in the third inning. The Yankees now hold only a slim 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven championship series.

The Yankees confirmed Sunday that A.J. Burnett would start Game 5 of the World Series on short rest.
If CC Sabathia gets through tonight's outing OK, it seems certain that the Yankees will also use Andy Pettitte on short rest in Game 6 and plan for Sabathia to come back in Game 7. Burnett threw 108 pitches over seven innings while winning Game 2 on Thursday.

A.J. Burnett held the Phillies to one earned run over seven strong innings Thursday as the Yankees grabbed Game 2 of the World Series 3-1.
Burnett took a little time to settle in, but his curveball was untouchable once he did. The righty struck out nine Phillies hitters and allowed only one burst of offense from the opposition. It was his first career World Series start, and he certainly rose to the occasion. Mariano Rivera took care of business in the eighth and ninth to earn his 38th career postseason save. The best-of-seven series is now tied 1-1 and is headed to Philadelphia.

Jorge Posada will be on the bench for Game 2 of the World Series, with Jose Molina catching A.J. Burnett.
Burnett hasn't exactly thrived with Molina catching him so far during the postseason, but manager Joe Girardi is sticking with the same routine.

Sources told SI.com's Jon Heyman that both the Yankees and Phillies are likely to use three-man rotations to begin the World Series.
Heyman believes the Yankees will go with three men all of the way through, while the Phillies might change things up in Games 5 and 6, rather than use Pedro Martinez on short rest. It'd be an awfully risky strategy for both teams, given the recent history of starters on three days' rest. Maybe CC Sabathia can handle it OK, but who knows if the same will be true of Cliff Lee, A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte. If Heyman is right, then Sabathia and Lee would match up in Games 1, 4 and 7.

A.J. Burnett was hammered for six earned runs over six innings Thursday as the Yankees dropped Game 5 of the ALCS to the Angels.
Burnett was torched in the bottom of the first inning for four hits, a walk and four earned runs as the Yanks fell to a major early deficit. They rallied against the Angels' relief corps, but Phil Hughes had trouble retiring batters in the seventh inning and the Halos eventually pulled out the victory. The best-of-seven series is headed back to New York.
