Willy Aybar has been shut down from his winter ball season in the Dominican Republic due to a sprained right wrist.
According to the team, the injury is minor and should not linger into Spring Training. Aybar, who turns 27 in March, batted .253/.331/.416 with 12 home runs and 41 RBI in 296 at-bats with the Rays last season. He's expected to resume his familiar utility role this season.

 Willy Aybar-1B - Rays Sep. 29 - 12:06 am et

Willy Aybar's pinch-hit three-run homer in the seventh inning pulled the Rays into a tie with the Orioles on Monday night, opening the door to an eventual 7-6 victory.
The Rays trailed 6-3 when Aybar stepped in for Fernando Perez with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and delivered the clutch blast. Pat Burrell put the Rays in front with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning before the Tampa bullpen slammed the door. The home run was Aybar's 12th of the year.
 Willy Aybar-1B - Rays Sep. 20 - 5:49 pm et

Willy Aybar belted a solo homer off Jays reliever Jesse Carlson on Sunday.
It was his only hit on the day in four trips to the plate. Aybar hasn't taken full advantage of Carlos Pena's season-ending injury up until now, but he has the power to make a difference in AL-only leagues for the final two weeks. Make a play for him if he's available in your league.
 Carlos Pena-1B - Rays Sep. 8 - 8:52 am et

Rays placed first baseman Carlos Pena on the 60-day disabled list with a fractured left index and middle finger.
Pena will miss the rest of the 2009 season. He finishes with a .227/.356/.537 batting line, 39 home runs and 100 RBI in 471 at-bats. Willy Aybar is expected to receive most of the remaining starts at first base with Chris Richard drawing sporadic playing time.
 Carlos Pena-1B - Rays Sep. 7 - 4:52 pm et

Carlos Pena will miss the remainder of the season after fracturing index and middle fingers on his left hand when hit by a CC Sabathia fastball Monday.
He finishes with a .227/.356/.537 line with 39 homers and 100 RBI in 471 at-bats. Willy Aybar will likely take over as the regular first baseman, which makes him well worth using in AL-only leagues. Akinori Iwamura, in turn, will likely receive some of the playing time that Aybar had received.

 Carl Crawford-OF - Rays Aug. 24 - 8:43 pm et

Carl Crawford departed Monday's game with lower back tightness.
The Rays are calling the speedy outfielder "day-to-day." He was 0-for-2 before taking off and was replaced in the lineup by Willy Aybar.
