Vernon Wells will undergo surgery next week to repair damaged cartilage in his left wrist.
He's expected to be healthy for spring training, but the surgery could impact the Blue Jays' chances of unloading Wells' contract this offseason. Wells hit .260/.311/.400 in 158 games this this season, yet is still owed $107 million through 2014.

Updating a previous item, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports that the Cubs have denied rumors of a possible Milton Bradley-for-Vernon Wells trade.
The Cubs quickly responded to a report in Saturday's Toronto Sun, saying the rumor has "no legs at all." The Cubs are reportedly looking to unload Milton Bradley this winter, but acquiring Vernon Wells in order to do it would clearly be the wrong strategy.

The Toronto Sun reports that the Chicago Cubs are eyeing Vernon Wells in a Milton Bradley trade.
"It's early on, but we think this one has some legs," said one Cubs official. "But they aren't the only team we are talking with." The Cubs' idea is to split the difference on Wells' $107 million over six years and Bradley's $21 million the next two years, with each team absorbing $43 million. It would take a lot of work to make a deal happen, but it may be the only way Toronto can wiggle out of the Wells contract.

According to MLB.com's Noah Coslov, Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi has been fired.
It's been a long time coming. Ricciardi has made a variety of questionable moves since signing on as general manager in November of 2001. From Vernon Wells' contract, to the releasing of Alex Rios, to the way Roy Halladay was handled at the trade deadline this season, Ricciardi never seemed to get things right in Toronto and often battled with the media. Assistant general manager Alex Anthopoulos has been promoted to fill the vacancy.

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, Toronto players are "fed up" with manager Cito Gaston and do not want him to return next season.
"It's nearly a mutiny right now," an unnamed source told Rosenthal. "He has lost the entire team." The Blue Jays faded this season, going 39-69 after a surprising 27-14 start, and it may have had something to do with turmoil in the clubhouse. Gaston is currently signed through 2010, but things can change quickly if enough players call for his head.
