The Orioles have approached free agent Joe Crede as part of their ongoing search for a starting third baseman.
The O's signed Garrett Atkins this offseason but would rather stick him at first base. "Crede is an option, but in our view, he's not the only option," said Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail. "We've primarily talked to free-agent [third basemen]. We're not completely out of the trade business, and we're still also very much involved in the first base market as well." They're even exploring a possible reunion with Miguel Tejada.

General manager Bill Smith said that Joe Crede is interested in returning to the Twins next season.
"His agent [Scott Boras] called shortly after the season and expressed [Crede's] interest in playing here," said Smith. "We're going to look at all options including Joe Crede and the young guys that we have. We'll try to make the best decision moving forward." Danny Valencia isn't quite ready for the majors, so if Smith exhausts the available free agent and trade options, a one-year incentive-laden contract for Crede might not be the worst thing.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Twins may bring Joe Crede back this winter despite a disappointing 2009 season.
Crede was hampered by back issues throughout the season and only played 90 games. On top of that, he hit just .225/.289/.414 with 15 home runs and 48 RBI. But his agent, Scott Boras, is pitching the 31-year-old as a stopgap to the Twins' up-and-coming infield prospects. "The great thing about Joe is you're hiring on a one-year contract," Boras said Thursday. "It's not often you're going to get that level of a player to sign for one year."

Jon Heyman of SI.com writes that the Orioles are considering Joe Crede to play third base.
Crede, 31, batted .225/.289/.414 with 15 home runs and 48 RBI in 90 games with the Twins this season. He recently underwent his third back procedure since 2007, and hasn't played a full season since 2006 with the White Sox. Crede insists that he will be ready for the start of spring training, but he probably won't do much better than an incentive-laden deal.

Joe Crede has been pleased with his recovery from another back surgery.
Crede underwent the surgery about two weeks ago. It's the third back procedure he's had since 2007. "It seems like this time, the recovery is a lot faster," he said. "I feel great right now compared to where I was last year. I'm so much further ahead, moving around a lot better." The free agent is expected to be fully healthy by the start of spring training.

Joe Crede (back) has been shut down for the rest of the season.
Crede, 31, is scheduled to undergo back surgery next week in Dallas. He'll finish the 2009 season with a .229/.293/.421 batting line, 15 homers and 48 RBI in 328 at-bats. The impending free agent may have a tough time convincing teams he's healthy this winter.
