Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston confirmed last week that Scott Downs and Jason Frasor will battle for ninth-inning duties this spring.
"It's going to be between [Downs & Frasor] and anybody else that Alex brings into camp," Gaston told Jordan Bastian of MLB.com. Downs had a 3.09 ERA and was 9-of-13 in save opportunites last season while Frasor posted a 2.50 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 11 saves in 14 chances. The Blue Jays are also interested in acquiring free agent Kevin Gregg, who could join the mix.

Scott Downs is not expected to pitch the remainder of the season.
Downs has been nursing a sore hamstring. If he doesn't appear in a game, he will finish the season with nine saves and a 3.09 ERA. He will compete for the closer's job in spring training, although the job seems Jason Frasor's to lose.

Blue Jays activated LHP Scott Downs from the 15-day disabled list.
Jays manager Cito Gaston has said he will ease Downs back into the closer's role, so Jason Frasor owners should hang tight for the moment. Downs was placed on the disabled list August 2 with an injury to his left big toe. He's 1-3 on the season with nine saves and a 3.41 ERA.

Scott Downs (toe) is set to come off the disabled list Monday, manager Cito Gaston said.
"He goes right back to the bullpen," Gaston said. "I'm not sure about closing. I'm not sure about that. We'll see how it goes. If he got here tomorrow and I said we're going to stick him in the closer's spot right away, I'm not sure if that's fair to him either." Downs and Jason Frasor may split save chances for the rest of the season.

Scott Downs tossed 1 1/3 innings of relief last week in his first rehab appearances for Single-A Dunedin.
Downs allowed a run on two hits in his first outing Tuesday but tossed a scoreless frame Thursday. He's been on the disabled list since early August with a left big toe injury and is eligible to return at any time. A few more scoreless innings and he might get the call.

Blue Jays placed LHP Scott Downs on the 15-day disabled list with a left big toe injury.
Jason Frasor is expected to reclaim the closer's role. The Jays haven't trusted him with eighth-inning duties this year, yet he's clearly the best option in the ninth right now.
