The Pirates and LHP Zach Duke avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $4.3 million contract.
The Pirates shopped Duke this winter but obviously didn't find a substantial return. The 26-year-old southpaw was 11-16 with a 4.06 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 2009 and even earned an All-Star nod.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that Zach Duke and Paul Maholm are available, however they would need to be "overwhelmed" in order to trade one of them.
A few clubs have checked in on the pair of left-handers, said a source. And why not? Maholm, 27, is owed a very reasonable $11 million through 2011, while Duke, 26, figures to earn between $3-4 million in arbitration this winter. He is under team control through 2011.

John Perrotto of Inside Pittsburgh Sports reports that the Pirates are willing to trade left-hander Zach Duke.
The Pirates aren't looking to upgrade at a specific position, however they would like to see what kind of package he could net in return. One player the Pirates will have their eyes on in Indianapolis next week is Tampa Bay shortstop Reid Brignac. According to Perrotto, the Pirates tried to acquire Brignac in a trade for Jason Bay last year and his name even came up in the Akinori Iwamura-Jesse Chavez talks last month. Duke, who turns 27 in April, is under team control through 2011. He was 11-16 with a 4.06 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 2009, earning his first All-Star nod.

 Ryan Doumit-C - Pirates Nov. 14 - 2:20 pm et

According to FOXSports.com, the Brewers didn't want Ryan Doumit in exchange for J.J. Hardy.
They weren't interested in Matt Capps, either. Instead, the Brewers asked for one of two left-handed starters, Zach Duke or Paul Maholm. The Pirates declined, so the the Brewers went on to trade Hardy to the Twins in exchange for 23-year-old center fielder Carlos Gomez. It's clear that the Pirates are willing to swap Doumit in the right package. The 28-year-old catcher is set to earn $3.55 million in 2010 and $5.1 million in 2011, with club options for two additional seasons.

 Zach Duke-S - Pirates Oct. 3 - 10:14 pm et

Zach Duke was hammered for five earned runs over five innings in a loss to the Reds on Saturday evening in Cincinnati.
Not the best way to end the year. His ERA hung in the 3.00's for most of the season, but is now locked in at 4.08 for all of eternity. He'll pair that with a 1.31 WHIP and an 11-16 record.
