Carlos Zambrano has dropped a good amount of weight this offseason.
"We did it quietly," general manager Jim Hendry said Thursday. "I don't think he wanted any publicity for that. He's going about his business well. I think you're going to get a very well-focused guy who's determined to rectify last year's season." Big Z is on a mission to atone for his nine-win 2009 season, in which he posted a 3.77 ERA and 1.38 WHIP.

 Carlos Zambrano-S - Cubs Jan. 14 - 5:51 pm et

During an appearance on the "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000 in Chicago, Carlos Zambrano said he wants to remain on the Cubs.
"I want to finish my career here, and I want to be a Cub forever," Zambrano said. Big Z is owed $53.75 million over the next three years, with a full-no trade clause, but that hasn't stopped his name from coming up in trade rumors all winter long. Zambrano admitted that poor conditioning was to blame for making only 28 starts last season -- the lowest since his rookie season in 2001 -- but declares himself in the best "shape of his life" leading into Spring Training.

General manager Jim Hendry expects Carlos Zambrano to remain with the Cubs.
"He's got full no-trade rights, which he negotiated into his contract," said Hendry. "I fully expect him to come back in 2010 and pitch like the old 'Big Z.'" Zambrano's agent Barry Praver has said that Hendry hasn't approached him about his client waving his no-trade clause, so even if his name was discussed with other clubs, as rumored in various outlets, it's likely that they didn't get very far. Zambrano is owed $53.75 over the next three seasons.

Carlos Zambrano is not interested in waiving his no-trade clause to go to the Yankees, according to his agent, Barry Praver.
Big Z is owed $53.75 million over the next three years. With a full no-trade clause, there's a decent chance he will stay in the Windy City through the duration of the pact. The Yankees will likely turn their attention to free agency, where starters such as Joel Pineiro and Ben Sheets could be of interest.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman "is believed to have inquired" about Cubs right-hander Carlos Zambrano, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
It's probably not a match. While the Cubs would have interest in Melky Cabrera or Brett Gardner, the asking price is too high, even off a down year for Big Z. The Yankees are more likely to find a starter via free agency, with Jason Marquis, Joel Pineiro and Ben Sheets as early possibilities. Cashman expected to secure a starter by the start of the new year.

Manager Lou Piniella won't rule out managing past 2010.
"Let's just wait and see," Piniella said when asked about his future plans. New Cubs owner Tom Ricketts will evaluate the baseball staff after the year. Despite being 66, it's hard to imagine Sweet Lou walking away just yet.
