Rangers signed C Toby Hall to a minor league contract.
Hall missed all of 2009 after undergoing shoulder surgery last February. He hit .260/.304/.331 with four doubles and three RBI in 120 plate appearances back in 2008 with the White Sox. The 34-year-old may be able to sneak in some major league playing time if Jarrod Saltalamacchia (shoulder surgery) isn't ready to go by the season opener.

Toby Hall will undergo shoulder surgery to fix a torn labrum.
The Astros are now allowed to void his minor league contract and will probably do just that. It was a tough decision for Hall, but he's fourth on the team's depth chart anyway. "It gives me a little peace of mind to go get (the surgery)," Hall said. "Seeing the MRI and seeing what I've been dealing with the last couple of years, it kind of puts me at ease to go get it fixed.

Toby Hall's MRI revealed "an unstable shoulder and a torn labrum."
Hall has no plans for surgery just yet, but he'll have sit out for an entire month. It doesn't sound like he'll be donning an Astros uniform in April. Sadly, he had a legitimate chance at claiming a roster spot on a team that boasts Humbetto Quintero, J.R. Towles and Lou Palmisano as alternatives at catcher.

Toby Hall, who signed a minor league deal with the Astros last month, is again having problems with his troublesome right shoulder and underwent an MRI last week.
Hall has been a true liability since being diagnosed with a torn labrum two years ago. "It just kind of stiffened up," he said. "We'll see what the doc says and go from there. Hopefully it's nothing big." Unless he proves he's healthy, he'd seem to have little chance of winning a job in Houston.
