 Jermaine Dye-OF- White SoxJan. 29 - 3:44 pm et
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com was told by an MLB executive that free agent Jermaine Dye turned down a $3.3 million offer from the Cubs this week.
The Cubs sent that same offer to Xavier Nady and worked out a deal quickly. Dye, 35, hit hit 27 homers in 2009 and posted a .302/.375/.567 batting line over the first half of the season, but he's going to have to accpet the fact that most organizations now value things like defensive metrics. He ranks among the worst outfielders in the league when it comes to such things.

 Xavier Nady-OF - Cubs Jan. 29 - 12:06 pm et

Cubs signed OF Xavier Nady to a one-year, $3.3 million contract.
The deal also contains another $2 million in performance incentives based on games played. Nady, 31, is expected to serve mostly as a fourth outfielder for the Cubs but should see a good amount of starts against left-handed pitchers. He hit .305/.357/.510 with 25 homers and 97 RBI with the Pirates and Yankees in 2008, his last truly healthy season.

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Xavier Nady will receive a $3.3 million base salary from the Cubs with a chance for $2 million in incentives based on games played.
The contract is contingent upon Nady passing a physical, which isn't a given after his second Tommy John surgery. The 31-year-old Nady is a .280/.335/.458 lifetime hitter and crushes lefty pitching, so he'll be a nice option for manager Lou Pinella if he passes.

A source tells Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com that Xavier Nady's deal with the Cubs is "not a foregone conclusion."
Why? Well, he's coming off his second Tommy John surgery, so the physical isn't the mere formality we hear about with most signings. Nady, 31, hit .305/.357/.510 with 25 homers and 97 RBI with the Pirates and Yankees in 2008, but was shelved for nearly the entirety of the 2009 season. Of course, he has the potential to be a very useful player in Chicago if he passes.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that outfielder Xavier Nady has agreed to a one-year contract with the Cubs.
Nady will serve as a fourth outfielder in Chicago behind Alfonso Soriano, Marlon Byrd and Kosuke Fukudome. He had a second career Tommy John surgery last season but he's expected to be fine by the start of spring training. The 31-year-old hit .305/.357/.510 with 25 home runs and 97 RBI between the Pirates and Yankees in 2008, his last fully healthy season.

The Cubs are interested in Xavier Nady, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com.
If Nady elects that path, he would be a fourth outfielder behind Alfonso Soriano, Marlon Byrd and Kosuke Fukudome. Nady's agent, Scott Boras, said he is "on schedule to be ready in spring training," following a second Tommy John surgery. Nady batted .305/.357/.510 with 25 home runs and 97 RBI between the Pirates and Yankees in 2008.
