Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post Dispatch says the Cardinals are currently negotiating with Albert Pujols on a contract extension.
Both the club and Pujols have tried to fend off extension talks all offseason, but it's clear that discussions are taking place. The 29-year-old is under team control through 2011, but the Cardinals are desperate to lock up the back-to-back NL MVP winner long-term. It is expected that his annual value will be close to $30 million. A deal must be consummated soon if Pujols plans to stick by his stance that he will not negotiate during the season.

Albert Pujols said he feels no urgency to negotiate a contract extension with the Cardinals, and will not do so during the season, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
"My timetable is when I’m a free agent," said Pujols. "Right now we’ve got a couple years. I don’t need to worry about that right now. Right now my job is to let my agent [Dan Lozano] do my talking…. We’re open to talk about it. But I tell you: When the season starts we’re not talking about it." Pujols is under team control through 2011, but the Cardinals don't want him to get even a sniff of the free agent market. Pujols is widely regarded as the best hitter in baseball and is expected to command close to $30 million annually.

In a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday, Mark McGwire admitted to using steroids on and off for nearly a decade.
"I wish I had never touched steroids," McGwire said in the statement. "It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era." McGwire retired after the 2001 season with 583 career home runs over a 16-year career. "I'm sure people will wonder if I could have hit all those home runs had I never taken steroids," McGwire said. "I had good years when I didn't take any, and I had bad years when I didn't take any. I had good years when I took steroids, and I had bad years when I took steroids. But no matter what, I shouldn't have done it and for that I'm truly sorry." He went on to take a page from Andy Pettitte's book by saying he used performance enhancers to recover from injury and to get back on the field. McGwire, now 46 years old, was hired as the Cardinals' hitting coach earlier this offseason.

Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt Jr. indicated Thursday that he expects contract extension negotiations with Albert Pujols to get underway soon.
"I would say in the not-too-distant future," said DeWitt Jr. "...I think the pace will be dictated somewhat by how he feels about it, how he sees things shaping up, and his representatives." Pujols is under team control through 2011, so time is on their side, but the Cardinals don't want him to get even a sniff of the free agent market. He's widely regarded as the best hitter in baseball and is expected to command close to $30 million annually.

Manager Tony La Russa expects new hitting coach Mark McGwire to address the media before Spring Training.
"He knows he's got to be forthcoming sooner than later," La Russa told Contra Costa Times. "Now that we're past the holidays and awards, I think it'll happen soon. ... I'm curious to see what he says. I know enough about him and his character, I know he's a quality guy." La Russa also hinted at the possibility of putting McGwire on the team's active roster on Aug. 31 in order to make him eligible for the postseason. McGwire is now 46 years old and hasn't played in the majors since 2001, but La Russa calls it "a nice little dream." It's likely to stay that way.

Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III acknowledged Thursday that the Cardinals will go beyond their "comfort level" in locking up Albert Pujols.
The Cardinals must keep their payroll around the $100 million dollar range, and extending Albert's contract could cost near $30 million annually. Devoting 30% of a payroll to one player is risky business, but Pujols might be the one exception. He has posted Hall of Fame numbers in his first nine seasons. "We'll definitely push, scratch and probably get beyond our comfort level and try to make something work with him," DeWitt III said. "I'm hoping that's good enough." Albert is under team control through 2011.
