Astros named Brad Arnsberg pitching coach, Al Pedrique bench coach and Bobby Meacham first-base coach.
If the Astros had many young pitchers worth worrying about, we'd be more critical of the Arnsberg hiring. His track record when it comes to injuries, both in Florida and Toronto, is horrible. Pitchers seem to like him, though, and the Astros don't have many talented young arms to burn out. Pedrique, the Astros' third-base coach for a time last year, was one of the candidates for the managerial vacancy before Brad Mills was hired.

 Roy Oswalt-S - Astros Oct. 7 - 10:36 am et

Astros general manager Ed Wade acknowledged Tuesday that he's concerned about Roy Oswalt's health.
Oswalt struggled with back inflammation for a good chunk of the season. He has decided to rehab this winter rather than undergo an operation. "We got to hope that he stays dedicated to the exercise program that's been prescribed," said Wade, "and he does everything he can to make sure that his back isn't an issue." Behind Roy, the Astros have Wandy Rodriguez, Bud Norris, Brian Moehler and Felipe Paulino. They may want to chase a free agent arm.

Astros placed RHP Roy Oswalt on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to September 16, with lower back inflammation.
Oswalt received a second opinion on his back Thursday from Dr. Andrew Dossett at the Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. The verdict? He won't need surgery and should be fully healed by the start of spring training. The 32-year-old finished the year 8-6 with a 4.12 ERA in 30 starts.

Roy Oswalt will get a second opinion on his back Thursday with a visit to Dr. Andrew Dossett at the Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.
Oswalt was declared "done for the season" last week due to a dehydrated disc and inflammation in his lower back. According to Astros general manager Ed Wade, it's basically just a fact-finding mission; the right-hander has no intention of trying to return this year.

The Astros have fired manager Cecil Cooper, according to MLB.com's Mike Siano.
Cooper's second season at the helm did not go well, as the team with a $103 million payroll languished near the bottom of the National League with a 70-79 record. Injuries certainly played a roll in the underachieving, as stars Lance Berkman and Roy Oswalt battled maladies throughout the season. Oswalt was recently shut down for the remainder of the season. Cooper's final record in two-plus seasons (he managed the final 31 games in 2007 in relief of the fired Phil Garner) with the Astros is 171-170. Third base coach Dave Clark will take over on an interim basis for the remainder of the season.

The Astros have shut down Roy Oswalt for the rest of the season due to lingering soreness in his back.
"It's not getting any better and [it's] kind of lingering a little bit," Oswalt said. "If we were in contention and fighting for the playoffs, I would try to get an epidural block and ride it as long as I could. But I don't want it to linger for next year." Oswalt will miss his last three starts. He's been battling the pain for his last four starts and has dealt with a bulging disk in his back since 2007. The 32-year-old finishes a disappointing year 8-6 with a 4.12 ERA in 30 starts. The eight wins were the fewest of his career.
