According to the New York Post, the Red Sox have requested medical records on free agent relievers Mike Gonzalez and Rafael Soriano.
Gonzalez, 31, went 5-4 with a 2.42 ERA this season and converted 10 of 17 save chances. Soriano, 29, was 1-6 with a 2.97 ERA in 77 games and racked up 102 strikeouts in 75 2/3 innings. He converted 27 of 31 save chances. Both would serve as excellent setup men in the Boston bullpen.

Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports that Rafael Soriano is suffering from muscle discomfort behind his right shoulder.
Soriano has really struggled of late, including serving up the go-ahead home run to Ryan Howard on Friday night, so this could be an explanation for his troubles. Soriano said he could pitch again as soon as Sunday night's game.

Rafael Soriano struck out the side in the ninth Saturday for a save against the Rockies.
With Mike Gonzalez down, Soriano continues to separate himself in the battle for saves in the Atlanta pen. He's up to 12 now.

Rafael Soriano picked up his fourth save of July with a scoreless ninth in a three-run game against the Cubs on Wednesday.
Mike Gonzalez hardly deserved to lose his job, but it looks like manager Bobby Cox has more faith in Soriano right now and it's hard to blame him. Besides, he's pushed the right buttons in alternating them so far. Soriano is currently sporting a 1.55 ERA in 40 2/3 innings. Gonzalez is at 3.10 in 41 1/3 innings.

Rafael Soriano picked up a save despite giving up two runs in the ninth Friday against the Nationals.
Manager Bobby Cox's platoon closer system has worked like a charm for the Braves, though Soriano did give the team a scare tonight. He's now 8-for-8 when given the chance to close. He has been charged with one blown save, but that came in the eighth inning of a game in May.

Javier Vazquez held the Pirates to one run while striking out 12 in eight innings on Thursday but was handed a no-decision.
Vazquez was exceptional, allowing only two hits and walking none. His only mistake was a solo homer by Delwyn Young in the fifth. Vazquez was relieved by Rafael Soriano in the ninth inning of a 1-1 game. Soriano was shaky, surrendering two runs on three hits and a walk, and the Braves lost 3-1. Vazquez lowered his ERA to 3.31 to go with a tiny 1.03 WHIP. He's been one of fantasy's best starting pitchers.
