Josh Towers has opted for free agency rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Scanton/Wilkes-Barre.
Towers was signed by the Yankees in May, but only made two appearances with the big club in September. Signed for organizational depth, the 32-year-old right-hander was one of Scanton/Wilkes-Barre's best starters, posting a 2.74 ERA in 101 2/3 innings. He would have been arbitration-eligible.

Yankees purchased the contact of RHP Josh Towers from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Towers actually spent one day on the Yankees roster in July, but failed to make an appearance. The 32-year-old right-hander was 7-6 with a 2.74 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 19 games (18 starts) with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He hasn't appeared in a major league game since 2007.

Yankees designated RHP Josh Towers for assignment.
The move makes room for Chad Gaudin on the roster. Towers didn't pitch Saturday in his lone day on the roster.

According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, Josh Towers will be designated for assignment Sunday to clear room for Chad Gaudin.
A bit of musical chairs in New York. Towers spent just one day with the Yanks and did not make it onto the field. He was 4-6 with a 3.78 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 42/16 K/BB ratio in 16 games (14 starts) with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, so perhaps other teams will have interest.

Yankees purchased the contract of RHP Josh Towers from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Signed to a minor league contract in May, Towers was 4-6 with a 3.78 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 42/16 K/BB ratio in 16 games (14 starts) with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. Towers is 45-55 with a 4.96 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 137 appearances in the majors (112 starts). He will work in middle relief for the Bombers.

Nationals optioned RHP Tyler Clippard, RHP Marco Estrada, OF Justin Maxwell and OF Leonard Davis to Triple-A Syracuse; optioned RHP Luis Atilano and SS Ian Desmond to Double-A Harrisburg; reassigned RHP Josh Towers, C Gustavo Molina, INF Freddie Bynum, 3B-OF Joel Guzman and OF Jorge Padilla to minor league camp.
If there's a surprise here, it's that Estrada wsa cut so early after throwing three hitless innings. Clippard wasn't given any starts this spring, and it appears as though the Nationals have soured on him without ever really trying him in the majors. Maxwell got the longest look of any of the hitters and was 5-for-21 with a homer and a triple.
