MLB.com's Bill Ladson says contract negotiations between the Nationals and first baseman-outfielder Adam Dunn are at "Stage 0."
In other words, the two sides are working on the ground floor and have a long way to go before an agreement is reached. Dunn smacked a team-high 38 home runs and tallied 105 RBI in '09 while posting a .927 OPS. He's entering the final season of a two-year, $20 million deal that he signed last February.

 Adam Dunn-OF - Nationals Jan. 29 - 2:27 pm et

Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports that the Nationals and first baseman-outfielder Adam Dunn are "talking about" a contract extension.
Dunn batted .267/.398/.529 last season and paced all Nationals with 38 homers and 105 RBI while earning $8 million. He is under contract for the 2010 season at a salary of $12 million. The slugger just turned 30 and could help the Nats build a respectable ball club over the long term.

 Josh Willingham-OF - Nationals Jan. 22 - 5:36 pm et

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Nationals have "once again put Josh Willingham back out on the market."
Olney suggests that a trade could clear the way for Adam Dunn to move back to the outfield. The Nats expressed interest in Mike Jacobs recently and might want to bring him in to play first base. Willingham, 30, hit .260 with an .863 OPS, 24 home runs and 61 RBI in 133 games last season.

 Mike Jacobs-DH - Royals Jan. 21 - 9:16 pm et

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo told the MLB Network Wednesday that he has interest in free agent first baseman Mike Jacobs.
As MLB.com's Bill Ladson notes on Twitter, it's a mystery as to how Jacobs might fit in with the Nationals. The club is already committed to Adam Dunn at first base and Mike Morse is his current backup. "When reached by phone," writes Ladson, "Mike Jacobs sounded like a person who wanted to play every day." Let's hope the Nats aren't considering moving Dunn back to the outfield.

According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals may inquire about the Nationals' Adam Dunn if they are unable to retain free agent outfielder Matt Holliday.
Interestingly, Strauss writes that several within the organization privately rooted for the team to land Dunn over Holliday last summer. Dunn is owed $12 million in the final year of a two-year deal. The Nationals haven't acknowledged that they are seeking offers for Dunn, but they would almost certainly require pitching in return for the 30-year-old slugger.

 Adam Dunn-OF - Nationals Oct. 4 - 1:11 pm et

Adam Dunn, still two homers shy of a sixth straight 40-homer season, is out of Sunday's lineup.
Dunn clearly isn't 100 percent, and unfortunately, a poor final three weeks cost him what was shaping up as his best season to date. He hit just one homer after Sept. 11, and his OPS dipped from 976 to 926.
