Pirates released outfielder Craig Monroe.
Monroe was designated for assignment on June 20 after hitting just .215/.287/.354 in 79 at-bats. He passed through waivers, but either didn't want to head to Triple-A Indianapolis or the Pirates had seen enough. Whatever the case may be, he's a free agent now.

Pirates designated Craig Monroe for assignment.
Monroe, hitting just .215 on the season, was moved to make roster room for Steve Pearce.

The Pirates said after Friday's game that they're calling up Steve Pearce and designated Craig Monroe for assignment.
Pearce was hitting .290/.348/.597 in June, giving him a .277/.363/.476 line for the year. Still, that's not very impressive for a 26-year-old who is a liability defensively and on the basepaths. He also was no better against lefties than righties. The Pirates were likely just as well off with Monroe.

Craig Monroe went 3-for-5 with three RBI Saturday to help the Pirates top the Padres.
Monroe doubled once and singled twice to lift his average to .304. He had the Pirates' coaching staff licking their chops this spring when he blasted eight home runs, and he's kept a nice pace at the plate over the first month of the regular season. Still, the Pirates haven't committed enough regular playing time to Monroe for him to have any sort of fantasy value.

Craig Monroe hit two three-run homers in a win over the Braves on Saturday afternoon.
Monroe homered in back-to-back innings, with the first off starter Jo-Jo Reyes in the sixth and the second off reliever Buddy Carlyle in the seventh. He showcased considerable clout during Spring Training, tying the club record with nine home runs. Still, he's unlikely to get enough regular playing time to have any value, even in NL-only leagues.

Craig Monroe will get his first start of the season on Wednesday night against the Astros.
He's hitless in just three at-bats on the young season, and is not currently worth owning in most NL-only leagues. The left-handed hitting Brandon Moss is out of the starting lineup against lefty Mike Hampton.
