Astros signed reliever Brandon Lyon to a three-year, $15 million contract.
It's a curious deal to give any reliever who hasn't shown he can close. "Brandon has put up good numbers in both leagues and we've gotten great feedback on his makeup", said GM Ed Wade. After posting a 2.86 ERA in 78.2 innings for Detroit in 2009, Lyon figures to battle Matt Lindstrom for the closer's job, and given the outlay of cash committed to Lyon, we'd be shocked if he didn't win the job. If so, the right-hander could be a cheap source of saves if you like to go that route.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that reliever Brandon Lyon's deal with the Astros is worth $15 million over three years.
It's absolutely shocking that Houston management is willing to give three years to Lyon, when just hours ago they told LaTroy Hawkins he couldn't have a two-year deal. Lyon is a fine reliever, and should do well throughout his tenure in Houston, but the Astros' game plan does seem a bit odd.

Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports the Astros have reached a deal with free agent reliever Brandon Lyon.
The Astros have made two moves in a matter of hours to solidify their bullpen for the 2010 season. Perhaps they felt scorned by LaTroy Hawkins' departure. Now with Lyon at closer and the recently-acquired Matt Lindstrom serving as his setup man, it appears Houston is all set, at lest from a relief standpoint. Lyon, 30, posted a 2.86 ERA and 1.11 WHIP this past season.

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, free agent Brandon Lyon is asking for a two-year contract worth $9 million.
Rosenthal thinks he just might get it, especially after LaTroy Hawkins secured a two-year, $7 million pact from the Brewers. Lyon declined the Tigers' offer of arbitration earlier this offseason and probably could have made $6 million through the process. The 30-year-old posted a 2.86 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 65 appearances while serving as Detroit's primary setup man in 2009.

Brandon Lyon has declined the Tigers' offer of arbitration.
Lyon stood to make close to $6 million through the arbitration process, but will instead seek out a multi-year deal on the open market. The 30-year-old posted a 2.86 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 65 appearances while serving as Detroit's primary setup man in 2009 and has drawn a fair amount of interest.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Phillies like Brandon Lyon, however his price may be too high.
While Lyon would add some stability, the Phillies are more likely to pursue a low-cost, high-reward option like J.J. Putz. Lyon's agent Barry Meister expects the 30-year-old right-hander will receive a multi-year contract this winter. He earned $4.25 million in 2009.
