Indians signed OF Austin Kearns to a minor league contract.
The Nationals declined Kearns' $10 million option in November and then denied him arbitration in December. Both were easy decisions. The 29-year-old hit just .195/.336/.305 in 2009 and isn't likely to have much of an impact next season for the Tribe.

Nationals declined arbitration to OF Austin Kearns, 1B Dmitri Young, C Josh Bard, LHP Ron Villone and RHP Livan Hernandez.
None of the players were ranked free agents so the Nats didn't stand to gain any compensation by offering them arbitration. Kearns, who hit .195/.336/.305 in '09, will struggle to land a reserve role this winter.

Nationals declined OF Austin Kearns' $10 million option for 2010.
This might be the no-brainer of the offseason. Kearns hit just .195/.336/.305 this season with three home runs and 51 strikeouts in 174 at-bats. The Nationals handed him a $1 million buyout to go away.

Austin Kearns (thumb) isn't expected to return before the end of the year.
Kearns underwent surgery over a month ago on his injured right thumb. "Unless something unexpectedly happens, we probably will not see him again," GM Mike Rizzo said Friday. "He just started gripping exercises and then it will go to taking balls off the tee, dry swings. So it's a long process from where he is at." Kearns' $10 million option for 2010 will, in all likelihood, not be picked up.

Austin Kearns still isn't ready to begin a rehab assignment following surgery three weeks ago on his right thumb.
There was some thought that he'd be back by now or at least on Sept. 1. If Kearns isn't able to see time in the minors before the season ends, then the Nationals aren't likely to activate him.

Austin Kearns (thumb) is progressing well and could return in the next few weeks.
He was placed on the DL on August 5 and subsequently underwent successful thumb surgery. Kearns could return soon after he is eligible to be activated. "I don't think it will be too much past his DL time," Nationals interim manager Jim Riggleman said. "We should be able to get him swinging again and get him activated. They are working on closing the sutures now."
