According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox have talked to Victor Martinez about a two-year contract.

That probably won't be enough to get it done. Martinez, who turns 32 in December, will surely be looking for more than two years when he becomes a free agent after the season. Cafardo speculates that the team is simply "trying to throw something out" to let Martinez know that they want to retain him for future seasons.

Victor Martinez finished 4-for-5 with a solo home run in the Red Sox's loss to the Rays on Saturday.

Martinez did his part, registering a homer in the eighth inning and scattering three singles. He's finally starting to flash some power and we're betting that the catcher has a seriously productive September.

Victor Martinez hit two solo home runs off David Price to lead the Red Sox to a 3-1 win over the Rays on Friday night.

A third of Martinez's 12 homers this year have come in two games. And before tonight, V-Mart had just one homer since coming off the disabled list on July 26. Still, there's plenty of value here in a catcher-eligible player batting in the middle of a banged up, but still potent lineup. If the Red Sox are going to make the playoffs, they are going to need a big September from Martinez.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia will make his first start for the Red Sox on Thursday.

Salty entered Wednesday's game as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning, however he didn't get an at-bat. Victor Martinez will start at first base for Thursday's matinee.

Victor Martinez was 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Yankees on Saturday.

It wasn't exactly a banner day for him, however, as he made a throwing error and allowed three stolen bases under his watch. Martinez is batting just .255 (12-for-47) with one home run and two RBI since returning from the disabled list on July 26. With Kevin Youkilis out for the rest of the year, the Red Sox are going to need him to step it up.

Kevin Youkilis left Monday's game against the Indians with an apparent injury to his right hand.

Youkilis appeared to be in real pain after his at-bat in the first inning. There's no early word on the severity, but they can't afford to lose him for a significant amount of time if they have any chance of hanging in the playoff race. Victor Martinez moved over to first base while Kevin Cash came in behind the plate. Stay tuned for an update on Youkilis' status.
