Manager Lou Pinella would like the newly-signed Marlon Byrd to bat fifth in his lineup this season.
"We have Derrek Lee who's a wonderful, wonderful three hitter," said Pinella. "[Aramis]Ramirez is very productive at the four spot. And we've settled in with Soriano at the six hole, and I think he's comfortable with it. We really just have the fifth hole to look at, and I've talked to the new hitting coach [Rudy Jaramillo] at length about Marlon, and he thinks he can fit in there." Should Lee and Ramirez stay healthy, Byrd should get plenty of chances to knock in runs this season. Just don't expect him to improve upon leaving the Ballpark at Arlington.

 Marlon Byrd-OF - Cubs Dec. 31 - 2:14 pm et

Marlon Byrd's three-year contract with the Cubs is heavily-backloaded, reports Chris De Luca and Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun Times.
Like the Mets plan to do with Jason Bay, the Cubs are putting Byrd on their credit card. Byrd will earn $3 million next season, $5.5 million in 2011 and $6.5 million in 2012. Byrd has already lost a step defensively and if his production slips with the move from Texas, he'll be yet another immovable object in the Chicago outfield by the end.

The Cubs have come to terms with free agent outfielder Marlon Byrd on a three-year, $15 million contract, reports Chris De Luca and Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun Times.
Jim Hendry doesn't have the best track record for multi-year contracts with outfielders, of course, so inking a 32-year-old outfielder doesn't come without some risk. Age and terms aside, perhaps the biggest concern is how Byrd will respond to leaving the Ballpark at Arlington. Byrd had an .873 OPS at home last season compared to a .740 OPS away. He could be an unproductive corner outfielder by the end of the contract.

Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports that the Cubs are expected to announce the signing of free agent outfielder Marlon Byrd to a three-year contract.
We don't have any specifics of the terms, but he'll surely see a sizable increase from the $3.06 million he made last season. An official announcement is expected shortly. Byrd, 32, will be reunited with his former hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo in Chicago. He batted .295/.352/.468 in three seasons under his tutelage in Texas.

The Cubs are close to a three-year deal with free agent outfielder Marlon Byrd, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports.
The Cubs haven't been alone in their pursuit of the 32-year-old outfielder, as the Yankees, Braves and Rangers have also expressed varied degrees of interest. Byrd earned $3.06 million last season with the Rangers, batting .283/.329/.479 with 20 homers, 89 RBI and 43 doubles. If a deal is completed, he would slot in as Chicago's starting center fielder.

 Jose Contreras-S - Phillies Dec. 28 - 4:41 pm et

The Cubs have interest in free agent right-hander Jose Contreras, according to ESPN Chicago's Bruce Levine.
Chicago has spoken to Contreras' agent, Jaime Torres. If signed, he would slot in the back of the rotation or as a long man out of the bullpen. Levine's report also said Cubs general manager Jim Hendry's top two free agent outfield targets are Marlon Byrd and Scott Podsednik, in that order. The Cubs have also spoken to the Rockies about a possible swap for Ryan Spilborghs, who would slot in as a versatile fourth outfielder, a role previously held by Reed Johnson.
