According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have made contact with the representatives for free agent Hank Blalock.
Blalock, 29, had a rough 2009 campaign, finishing with a .234/.277/.459 batting line. But he did hit 25 home runs and the Pirates don't have a clear-cut starter at first base. If he does sign with Pittsburgh, it'll most likely be on a short-term deal designed to revitalize his value.

 Hank Blalock-1B - Rangers Oct. 5 - 8:06 am et

Hank Blalock went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored Sunday in the Rangers' season finale.
Blalock suffered a concussion on Wednesday night and probably should have been held out of Sunday's lineup, but he manned up and put in a hard days' work on the final day of the regular season. He'll finish the year with a disappointing .234 batting average, but hit 25 homers and collected 66 RBI.
 Hank Blalock-1B - Rangers Oct. 2 - 9:42 am et

Hank Blalock was held out of Thursday's lineup with a slight headache after getting plunked in the helmet Wednesday night.
"I've never been hit in the head before in my life," Blalock said. "I went back to my position a little dizzy and started seeing stars... so I had to come out." He was diagnosed with a mild concussion, but expects to return to the Rangers' starting lineup on Friday.

 Hank Blalock-1B - Rangers Sep. 24 - 1:43 am et

Hank Blalock was 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in a win over the Athletics on Wednesday night.
Blalock had a pair of RBI doubles to go along with a two-run home run. Nights like these have been few and far-between lately, as Blalock had just 13 extra-base hits in 172 second half at-bats entering Wednesday's action. The 25 home runs look impressive on the surface, but a .284 on-base percentage to go along with a 767 OPS are the true indicators of his unremarkable season.
 Chris Davis-1B - Rangers Sep. 2 - 6:05 pm et

Chris Davis started at third base for the Rangers on Wednesday, although Rangers manager Ron Washington said the plan is to use Omar Vizquel and Esteban German at third with Michael Young injured.
Young is expected to miss at least two weeks with a strained left hamstring. Washington said he wasn't ruling out using Davis at third base, but that he didn't want to move him back and forth defensively. Too late for that. Hank Blalock was ruled out as an option. The guess here is that Vizquel, German and Davis share the position. Playing Davis at third, of course, provides the nice ancillary benefit of opening first base for Blalock.

 Hank Blalock-1B - Rangers Sep. 2 - 4:47 pm et

Hank Blalock is getting the start at first base on Wednesday.
With Michael Young sidelined due to a hamstring strain, Chris Davis is moving over to third, giving Blalock the opportunity to start. However, mixed league owners will still likely want to avoid Blalock given that he hasn't homered since Aug. 8 and is sporting a .236 average and .276 on-base percentage this season.
