Nick Green refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket and is now a free agent.
Green was pressed into extended duty with the Red Sox this season, but was dropped off the 40-man roster last week and will likely try to find a bench job elsewhere.

 Nick Green-SS - Red Sox Nov. 6 - 4:13 pm et

Nick Green is scheduled to undergo back surgery Monday in Boston.
Green suffered a back injury in September, compounding a fatigue problem in his right leg. He was sent outright to Triple-A Pawtucket earlier this week and is expected to opt for free agency. The infielder hit .236/.303/.366 in 276 at-bats this season and should be fine by spring training 2010.

Red Sox sent infielder Nick Green, RHP Fernando Cabrera and OF Joey Gathright outright to Triple-A Pawtucket.
All three figure to become free agents. Green hit .236/.303/.366 in 276 at-bats while playing a much bigger role than expected for the Red Sox last season. He'll look for a utility job elsewhere.

Nick Green is still unable to take grounders and hit in the cage without feeling fatigue in his right leg.
It now seems unlikely that Green will be ready for the second round, if the Red Sox advance. "I'm making progress, but as far as game speed and stuff, I'm not sure," he said. "It's felt the same for the last couple days."

Nick Green (leg fatigue) ran in the outfield, took batting practice and fielded grounders Friday afternoon.
Green is hoping to play at some point this weekend in order to get himself prepared for the postseason. He feels like he's almost ready. "That's just my judgment," said the shortstop. "But there's such a difference between practice and a game." He was batting .236/.303/.366 before the injury.

 Nick Green-SS - Red Sox Oct. 1 - 5:49 pm et

Nick Green fielded ground balls Thursday, but his right leg continued to give out on him.
"It’s getting better, but it’s still frustrating because it’s not where I want it to be," said Green. The utility infielder had been hoping to return by Friday, but now his availability for even the postseason is in doubt. It hurts Boston, as their options behind Green are less than savory.
