Brad Lidge underwent surgery Wednesday to repair his flexor pronator tendon in his right hip and to have a loose body removed from his elbow.
"Brad could be one to two weeks behind in spring training, but, overall, we feel very good about his recovery time," GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "We're hopeful that he will be ready close to Opening Day."‬ While there's been talk that the Phillies would sign a closer this winter, odds are that Lidge will have the job going into next season.

Brad Lidge will have surgery on Wednesday to remove a loose body from his right elbow.
He will also have his right flexor tendon evaluated. Lidge's elbow caused him some pain during the season, but he insists that the condition never affected his performance. His 7.21 ERA suggests otherwise. Lidge's agent Rex Gary expects him to be ready for the start of spring training, but his rehab could be longer if treatment is required on his flexor tendon.

Brad Lidge may require arthroscopic surgery to clean up loose bone fragments in his pitching elbow.
Lidge is undergoing a MRI to help make this determination. The ailment reportedly never affected Lidge in the regular season, during which he also battled a sprained right knee. His 7.21 ERA makes that hard to believe. Any surgery would not compromise Lidge's availability in spring training. Raul Ibanez (muscle tears in groin, abdomen) and Jamie Moyer (torn meniscus in knee) both also underwent MRIs and may also be candidates for surgery

Brad Lidge (flu) is available for Game 3 of the World Series.
Lidge fell ill with the same virus that sidelined Greg Dobbs in Game 2, but with the scheduled day-off, he's good to go for Saturday. Lidge hasn't pitched since October 21 against the Dodgers in the NLCS, a 10-day layoff.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel refused to identify a closer on Wednesday, just a day before Game 1 of the NLCS.
"I don't want to sit here today and say one guy is going to be the closer on our team yet," Manuel said. "I don't feel like I have to do that. I feel like our guys accept when I'm going to put them in the game." Lidge has earned two one-run saves this postseason while Madson has blown two. It's pretty clear to anyone with a set of eyes who will be trusted late in NLCS contests.

After Ryan Howard hit a sac fly in the top of the ninth, Brad Lidge closed out a 6-5 game Sunday as the Phillies took a 2-1 series lead over the Rockies in the NLDS.
The Phillies went to Lidge even with two lefties, a switch-hitter and another lefty due up to start the ninth. The slumping Brad Hawpe decided against working the count before grounding out to second. Carlos Gonzalez put together a far superior at-bat in working a walk. At that point, Jim Tracy decided to overmanage, bringing in a chilled Jason Giambi rather than sticking with Dexter Fowler, who was 2-for-4. Giambi popped up on a fastball out of the strike zone, and after an unintentional-intentional walk to Todd Helton, Troy Tulowitzki flew out to end it. Game 4 will be played Monday, with Game 1 starters Cliff Lee and Ubaldo Jimenez set to start.
