Angels signed RHP Fernando Rodney to a two-year contract.
Mediocrity pays. Terms were not disclosed, but Rodney is expected to earn somewhere around $11 million over the two seasons. As the team's press release points out, Rodney, who turns 33 in March, was sixth in the American League last season with 37 saves and led all A.L. pitchers with 65 games finished, but that's no reflection of how he actually pitched. Rodney lived dangerously with a 4.40 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 61/41 K/BB ratio in 75 2/3 innings. He has a 4.28 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in seven career seasons.

The Angels have signed reliever Fernando Rodney to a two-year, $11 million contract, according to Jorge Arangure Jr. of ESPN.com.
Arangure translated the news from a story by Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes. It's slightly less than the rumored two-year, $12 million offered by the Phillies, so perhaps he was promised a chance to compete with Brian Fuentes for the ninth-inning gig. That isn't to say he's a solid option. Rodney converted 37 of 38 save chances with the Tigers last season despite a mediocre 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP.

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com cites a person with knowledge of the situation that the Phillies have an agreement in place with a reliever.
Don't expect an official announcement until the first week of January. Salisbury speculates that it could be Danys Baez, but the Phillies have also been connected to Fernando Rodney and the recently non-tendered Mike MacDougal. Baez, 32, compiled a 4.02 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in '09. His career-high 60.9% groundball rate was among the league leaders.

According to ESPN.com's Buster Olney, the Phillies would like to ink Fernando Rodney on a contract worth around $12 million over two years.
Rodney is reportedly seeking a three-year, $30 million deal, but hopefully he'll soon realize that kind of demand is ridiculous. Even paying him $12 million over two years is ridiculous, in fact. Rodney, 32, was 37-for-38 in save opportunities this year, but posted an ugly 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 75 2/3 innings. He would serve as a setup man in Philadelphia.

MLB.com's Todd Zolecki was told by a source "that talks aren't serious" between the Phillies and free agent reliever Fernando Rodney.
Rodney is reportedly in serious discussions with the Angels. If Los Angeles seals that deal, the Phillies could turn their attention to a host of relievers for bullpen help, including John Smoltz, Mike MacDougal or Danys Baez, amongst others. Chan Ho Park and Scott Eyre could also be candidates to return, although Amaro has said Park is unlikely to re-sign.

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports that the Angels are in serious discussions with free agent reliever Fernando Rodney.
The Angels are poised to add another dud to the back of their pen. Rodney, 32, was 37-for-38 in save opportunities last season, but posted a less-than-stellar 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 75 2/3 innings. He's reportedly seeking a three-year, $30 million contract, but is hard-pressed to get anything close to that.
