J.P. Howell pitched a perfect ninth in a one-run game for his second save Thursday against the Royals.
Matchups didn't dictate the choice, as lefty killer Billy Butler was up to start the ninth. Mike Jacobs was due to bat second, but Jose Guillen was behind him. All things being equal, the Rays should have wanted a right-hander pitching the ninth. However, it looks like manager Joe Maddon trusts Howell over everyone else in the bullpen. It just remains to be seen whether that will result in many additional saves.
