Yankees signed outfielder Marcus Thames to a minor league contract.
Thames receives $900,000 if he makes the major league roster out of spring training, which he will be invited to. He will compete with Randy Winn and Brett Gardner for playing time, as well as provide an extra right-handed bat in the outfield. Thames is a poor defensive outfielder, but he rocks left-handed pitching to the tune of an .845 career OPS. Originally drafted by the Yankees in 1996, Thames batted .252/.323/.453 with 13 home runs in 258 at-bats last season for the Tigers. Detroit released him in early November.

 Marcus Thames-DH - Yankees Feb. 8 - 3:30 pm et

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Yankees have signed outfielder Marcus Thames.
Terms of the contract are not yet known. Thames could enter a left field platoon with Randy Winn. Generally considered a poor defensive outfielder, Thames has value in his .845 career OPS against left-handed pitching. The Yankees will also benefit from having an extra right-handed bat in the outfield. Thames, originally drafted by the Yankees in 1996, batted .252/.323/.453 with 13 home runs in 258 at-bats last season.

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Yankees may look at Marcus Thames, Rocco Baldelli or Jonny Gomes if they can be had at a low salary.
Brian Cashman is smart enough to know that Randy Winn alone isn't the answer. Heyman adds that the Yankees once had Thames and liked him. Thames, originally drafted by the Yankees in 1996, batted .252/.323/.453 with 13 home runs in 258 at-bats last season. He's generally a pretty bad outfielder, but has an 845 career OPS against left-handed pitching. The Yankees could use an extra right-handed bat in the outfield.

 Jonny Gomes-OF - Reds Jan. 12 - 9:03 am et

The Royals have "some interest" in free agent Jonny Gomes, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com.
Kansas City management is also kicking the tires on Marcus Thames in an effort to find a power-hitting DH and corner-outfield type of player. The club is clearly worried that Jose Guillen (hamstring) won't be able to stay healthy for the duration of the season. Gomes, 29, hit 267/.338/.541 with 20 home runs and 51 RBI in 281 at-bats last season while the 32-year-old Thames batted .252/.323/.453 with 13 homers and 36 RBI in 258 at-bats.

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Blue Jays and Indians have shown interest in free agent Marcus Thames.
As Morosi notes, "teams need right-handed power and have yet to establish clear everyday left fielders for 2010." Thames posted a respectable .252/.323/.453 batting line and 13 home runs in just 258 at-bats this past season. He was released by the Tigers in early November.

Tigers released outfielder Marcus Thames.
Thames spent his last six seasons with the Tigers, belting a home run per every 14.78 at-bats. He hit just .252/.323/.453 this season, but blasted 13 homers and collected 36 RBI in 258 at-bats. He's an awful defensive outfielder, but that kind of power should land him a deal.
