| Matt Cain's 2009 Profile | | They wouldn’t have come out and said it publicly, but going into last season, there’s no doubt that if the right hitter came along, the Giants would have parted with Tim Lincecum before trading Cain. Unfortunately, while Lincecum was in the process of putting together a Cy Young resume, Cain showed a stunning lack of progress. He’s the exact same pitcher now that he was when he entered the league in 2005. That still makes him pretty good, and it is encouraging that he hasn’t had any arm problems at all. Still, more was expected. In his defense, Cain might have been a little unlucky last year, and not just when it comes to wins and losses. Even though he struck out more batters than he did in 2007, his batting average against was the highest of his career. As for the 8-14 record, he had 14 quality starts that resulted in losses and no-decisions. It would surprise most to learn that Cain is younger than Lincecum. One can still hold out hope that he’ll bust out with an ERA in the low-3.00s, 200 strikeouts and perhaps even a dozen wins.Updated Jul. 15: Matt Cain plans to throw a between-starts bullpen session Thursday. Cain was lifted from his last start with a bruised right elbow and had to be pulled from the National League All-Star roster. He's still hoping to make his next start (on Sunday), but that hinges on how he throws during the workout Thursday in Pittsburgh. We'll be sure to keep you updated. | | Year | Tm | G | GS | IP | W | L | HLDS | S | K | ERA | WHIP | | Proj | SF | - | - | 209.0 | 13 | 11 | 0 | 0 | 182 | 3.53 | 1.26 | | 2008 | SF | 34 | 34 | 217.2 | 8 | 14 | 0 | 0 | 186 | 3.76 | 1.36 | | 2007 | SF | 32 | 32 | 200.0 | 7 | 16 | 0 | 0 | 163 | 3.65 | 1.26 | | 2006 | SF | 32 | 31 | 190.2 | 13 | 12 | 0 | 0 | 179 | 4.15 | 1.28 |
