Matt Cain limited the Padres to two earned runs over five innings Saturday evening but was handed a loss.
Cain struck out five San Diego hitters against one walk, but got zero run support and fell to 14-8 on the year. He'll finish his impressive 2009 campaign with a 2.89 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 171/73 K/BB ratio over 217-plus innings. We're expecting big things in 2010, and rightly so.

 Matt Cain-S - Giants Sep. 27 - 6:56 pm et

Matt Cain tossed eight shutout innings, striking out eight, to beat the Cubs on Sunday.
Sergio Romo spoiled the shutout in the ninth, giving Brian Wilson a cheap save in a 5-1 win. Cain was coming off three straight loss to division rivals, and this was probably a case of too little, too late for the Giants. Still, he helped his fantasy owners a bunch.
 Matt Cain-S - Giants Sep. 23 - 1:29 am et

Matt Cain was tagged for seven runs over 2 1/3 innings in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday night, dropping the Giants five games back in the Wild Card race.
We were expecting a regression, it's just a shame that it had to happen during the most critical month of the season, for the Giants and fantasy owners alike. Cain is now 1-3 with a 7.06 ERA over four starts this month. The nightmare month has upped his season ERA to 2.99 -- it's highest point since mid-May. By the time Cain starts against the Cubs on Sunday, the Giants might not even be in the race anymore.
 Matt Cain-S - Giants Sep. 17 - 1:27 am et

Matt Cain allowed four runs over six innings in a 4-3 loss to the Rockies on Wednesday night.
After superb efforts by Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito, Cain just couldn't finish the job. He allowed five hits, including two homers, while fanning two and walking a pair. Cain has allowed four runs in three of his last four starts, upping his ERA to 2.71 on the year. He has just one win since July 24.
 Matt Cain-S - Giants Sep. 12 - 1:16 am et

Matt Cain yielded four runs over six innings in a 10-3 loss to the Dodgers on Friday night.
Cain has managed to avoid getting knocked around in the first inning this season, but he reverted to old form on Friday, giving up two runs before the Giants even came up to bat. With his feeble offense, it was already too late. Cain scattered seven hits against three walks and five strikeouts in the loss, dropping to 13-5 on the year. The Giants are beginning to fade during the most important part of their schedule.
 Matt Cain-S - Giants Sep. 5 - 7:34 pm et

Matt Cain allowed two runs over seven-plus innings in a victory over the Brewers on Saturday.
Finally lucky No. 13 for Cain. He had been stuck on 12 victories for seven starts, even though he turned in four terrific outings during the span. He might buy Brian Wilson dinner for this one. Wilson came in with two on and one out in the eighth, got out of the jam and then pitched a scoreless ninth.
