The Cubs and INF Jeff Baker avoided arbitration on Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $975,000 contract.
Baker, 28, missed the first part of the season due to a sprained left hand, but thrived after being acquired from the Rockies in early July, batting .305/.362/.448 with four home runs and 21 RBI in 203 at-bats. He's clearly the Cubs' best option at second base headed into Spring Training.

Aramis Ramirez (sore shoulder) could be shut down for the year.
"I'm not going to say that, but we'll see," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. At this point, there is little reason to risk further injury. Ramirez was out of the lineup during Wednesday's doubleheader. Jeff Baker is in the lineup for the nightcap.

Aramis Ramirez (sore shoulder) is expected to play sparingly over the final week of the regular season.
Cubs manager Lou Piniella told reporters that he appreciates Ramirez's willingness to play through the pain, but it's simply not worth risking further injury. He was held out of Tuesday's lineup in favor of Jeff Baker.

Ramirez has struggled with shoulder soreness throughout late September and could be close to calling it a season. Jeff Baker drew the start at third.

Jeff Baker is manning third base for the Cubs, with Mike Fontenot drawing the start at second. It's not clear if A-Ram's injury is serious.

Jeff Baker crushed a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning Thursday to lead his Cubs over the Giants 3-2.
The Cubs are playing the role of pesky spoiler at this point, holding the Giants back in the NL Wild Card race and preventing the rival Cardinals from clinching the NL Central all in the same night. Baker launched his two-run bomb off hot closer Brian Wilson. He finished 2-for-4 and is batting .306 on the season with four dingers and 22 RBI.
