New Padres general manager Jed Hoyer had a "cordial" meeting with Adrian Gonzalez's agent John Boggs on Friday, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports.
"There wasn't any kind of negotiating or exchanging of numbers or anything like that," said Boggs in what was effectively a meet-and-greet with Hoyer. "I'm sure we're going to keep the dialogue open, but nothing is imminent at this point. The way we're looking at it, Adrian is a Padre until something happens. And they're the ones who are really in control of the situation." Gonzalez, 27, is under team control for two more seasons, but would reap a boatload of prospects in a potential trade.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, there are signs first baseman Adrian Gonzalez will be traded "sooner than later."
Gonzalez, 27, is under team control for another two years. But he'll continue to lose value as free agency nears. As the Union-Tribune notes, the slugger was left out of a brochure shipped to prospective season-ticket holders at the end of the season and his agent, John Boggs, has not been approached by the Padres' new ownership group about the possibility of inking a contract extension. Gonzalez posted a .958 OPS and 40 home runs this season. A laundry list of teams would come calling if he's made available this winter.

The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo reports that it is not clear whether or not Adrian Gonzalez will be shopped.
Cafardo mentions that incoming principal owner Jeff Moorad clashed with former GM Kevin Towers on whether or not Gonzalez should be dealt, with Moorad preferring the player stay in town. With Jed Hoyer in charge now, it's unknown whether Moorad continues to feel the same way. Gonzalez is under club control for the next two years for $10.25 million, a ludicrous bargain. The Padres could bring in a bevy of talent by dealing Gonzalez now, and Hoyer was part of the Red Sox team that negotiated the failed trade at the deadline. The pieces are there for the Wesleyan graduate to assemble a trade should that determination be made.

Former Padres general manager Kevin Towers says Adrian Gonzalez will be traded.
"They're going to have a $40 million payroll for the foreseeable future," said Towers in reference to his former team. "And there's just no way they can devote half of that to one player. It's just a matter of when they decide to trade (Gonzalez)." Gonzalez is set to make just $4.75 million in 2010 with a $5.5 million club option for 2011 before hitting the open market in 2012, so new Padres general manager Jed Hoyer could make out like a bandit in a potential trade. The Red Sox, Hoyer's former club, are rumored to have interest in the 27-year-old first baseman.

SI.com reports that the Padres "will name Jed Hoyer as their new general manager later today."
Hoyer has worked for the Red Sox since 2002 and will be leaving his position as senior vice president and assistant general manager to take over for longtime Padres GM Kevin Towers.

Padres manager Bud Black announced Thursday that his entire coaching staff will return intact in 2010.
That includes hitting coach Randy Ready, bench coach Ted Simmons, pitching coach Darren Balsley, first base coach Rick Renteria, third base coach Glenn Hoffman and bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds. Ready is interviewing for the Astros' managerial opening, but will return to San Diego if he doesn't land it. The Padres went 75-87 in 2009.
