Joe Mauer downplayed a report from the St. Paul Pioneer Press that he and the Twins have begun talks on a contract extension.
"Nothing new to report," said Mauer. "I've gotten a chance to start thinking about those things, but we really haven't started [negotiating with the Twins]." The Twins are expected to push for a contract extension this winter before he enters his walk year. The 26-year-old catcher was awarded with his second Gold Glove award on Tuesday and should be named the American League MVP later this month.

 Joe Mauer-C - Twins Nov. 11 - 3:14 pm et

Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the Twins have begun extension talks with Joe Mauer's agent Ron Shapiro.
No word on any parameters of a deal, but team president Jerry Bell is confident about the negotiations. "Everything in time ... it'll work out — I hope, and I'm pretty sure," said Bell. "I feel good about it because I think he wants to stay here, and we sure want him to be here and all of his teammates want him to be here." Mauer, who is likely to be named the American League MVP later this month, will earn $12.5 million in 2010, the last year of his contract.

Joe Mauer, who was hobbled by a sore hip flexor near the end of the season and into the first round of the playoffs, is already feeling better.
"He's doing very well," Twins GM Bill Smith said Tuesday. "We've gotten all good reports. I think he's pleased and looking forward to a fairly normal offseason and normal preparation for spring training." Mauer led the AL in batting average (.365), on-base percentage (.444) and slugging percentage (.587) in '09 and is likely to pick up his first MVP this month.

Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Joe Mauer has been playing with a sore hip flexor.
But that won't keep Mauer from being behind the plate. He intends to catch, not DH, the rest of the way. Mauer suffered the injury when he tripped around first base during Tuesday's 12-inning win over the Tigers.

Joe Mauer will start Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Tigers.
He reportedly told manager Ron Gardenhire, "I got this." The Twins can tie the Tigers for first-place in the AL Central with a victory.

Joe Mauer was 2-for-4 with an RBI in a win over the Indians on Tuesday night.
Ho-hum. Just another multi-hit game for Mauer. Sure, it wasn't a three-hit game like he had over the past two games, but he increased his league-leading batting average to .373. Mauer is batting an even .400 in 50 at-bats to start September. His first inning gave him 85 RBI -- tying his career-high, set last season.
