| Joe Mauer's 2009 Profile | | In 2006, Mauer became the first catcher in AL history to win a batting title and last season he became the first catcher in AL history to win the batting title twice. Yet for all the lofty averages, his lack of power development has no doubt disappointed fantasy owners. Mauer's 6-foot-5 frame seemingly suggests that power is still on the way, but his opposite-field approach at the plate says otherwise. He's certainly capable of smacking 15-20 homers in time, but it's unlikely that there are 30-homer seasons in Mauer's future. Of course, he was the top fantasy catcher in baseball last season despite homering just nine times, so that hardly stops him from being a stud. It's basically a coin-flip between Mauer, Russell Martin, and Brian McCann for the top spot at catcher in 2009, but if healthy Mauer's all-around game should top Martin's speed and McCann's power.Updated Jul. 13: Joe Mauer will bat third and play catcher for the American League to kick off the All-Star game on Tuesday night. Ichiro Suzuki will lead off and play right field, followed by Derek Jeter (shorstop), Mauer (catcher), Mark Teixeira (first base), Jason Bay (left field), Josh Hamilton (center field), Evan Longoria (third base) and Aaron Hill (second base). With the game being played in a National League park, manager Joe Maddon can get creative in the ninth spot. | | Year | Tm | AB | H | AVG | HR | RBI | RUNS | SB | OBP | SLUG | TB | OPS | | Proj | MIN | 439 | 142 | .323 | 11 | 68 | 81 | 4 | .414 | .474 | 208 | .888 | | 2008 | MIN | 536 | 176 | .328 | 9 | 85 | 98 | 1 | .413 | .451 | 242 | .864 | | 2007 | MIN | 406 | 119 | .293 | 7 | 60 | 62 | 7 | .382 | .426 | 173 | .808 | | 2006 | MIN | 521 | 181 | .347 | 13 | 84 | 86 | 8 | .429 | .507 | 264 | .936 |
