The Diamondbacks and RHP Aaron Heilman avoided arbitration Monday by agreeing to a one-year, $2.15 million contract.
The D'Backs acquired Heilman this offseason from the Cubs for two minor leaguers. He had a 4.11 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 70 appearances in 2009 and is expected to serve in middle relief for Arizona.

Diamondbacks acquired RHP Aaron Heilman from the Cubs for LHP Scott Maine and 1B Ryne White.
Some have speculated that Heilman was a non-tender candidate after posting a 4.11 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 70 relief appearances in 2009, so at least the Cubs got something. It may behoove the Diamondbacks to give the 31-year-old right-hander a shot in their rotation, however general manager Josh Byrnes has already referred to him as a "durable reliever." Poor control has led to Heilman's downfall over the past two seasons, but this is a fine risk worth taking for Arizona, especially considering the little talent they gave up.

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Cubs have traded Aaron Heilman to the Diamondbacks for prospect LHP Scott Maine and 1B Ryne White.
Heilman was a non-tender candidate after posting a 4.11 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 70 relief appearances in 2009. Perhaps he'll finally get another chance to start in Arizona. Maine, 24, was 4-5 with seven saves and a 2.90 ERA in 48 relief appearances between Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno in 2009. White, 23, batted .266/.371/.356 with six home runs and 52 RBI in 116 games for Single-A Visalia last season.

ESPN Chicago's Bruce Levine heard from major league sources Monday that Rich Harden will not be traded to the Twins.
Cubs right-hander Aaron Heilman, who was claimed off waivers by the Giants last week, will also stay put in Chicago. The Cubs had an opportunity here to dump salary and pick up a few prospects, but the Twins probably weren't willing to part with any of their top talent. Harden, 27, is set to become a Type A free agent in the fall. He is 8-7 this season with a 3.99 ERA in 22 starts.

Cubs reliever Aaron Heilman and starter Rich Harden were both claimed on waivers, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.
Harden is unlikely to go anywhere. He's been hot since the All-Star Break (1.80 ERA, five starts) and projects as a Type-A free agent in the offseason. Heilman, however, is earning $1.625 million this year and has a 4.55 ERA in 57 relief appearances. If the Cubs are prepared to concede that their season is over, they could save money and get an average prospect in return for the right-hander. Rosenthal has indicated that he was claimed by a team from the National League.

Closer Kevin Gregg and setup man Carlos Marmol are both unavailable on Tuesday.
Both have pitched three of the last four days, so manager Lou Piniella is simply giving them the day off. Aaron Heilman is expected to get the first crack at closing should there be a save opportunity.
