Phillies manager Charlie Manuel refused to identify a closer on Wednesday, just a day before Game 1 of the NLCS.
"I don't want to sit here today and say one guy is going to be the closer on our team yet," Manuel said. "I don't feel like I have to do that. I feel like our guys accept when I'm going to put them in the game." Lidge has earned two one-run saves this postseason while Madson has blown two. It's pretty clear to anyone with a set of eyes who will be trusted late in NLCS contests.

 Ryan Madson-R - Phillies Oct. 4 - 9:05 am et

Manager Charlie Manual said that Ryan Madson will be his closer during the postseason.
It's the right move. Madson has been a lights-out setup man with a high-90s fastball. Somewhat concerning is his six blown saves in 16 opportunities, but when your alternative is Brad Lidge, the choice is fairly easy. Madson will be on a short leash, as manager Charlie Manuel expects Lidge to play a pivotal role.

Ryan Madson recorded a six-out save in a win over the Astros on Tuesday night.
Madson sat the Astros down in order in the eighth, but made things interesting in the ninth, giving up two singles before striking out Carlos Lee and Hunter Pence to end it. He's the Phillies' best-end game option right now.

Ryan Madson recorded four outs without allowing a run to pick up a save against the Brewers on Sunday.
Madson gave up a double, walked none, and struck out one. Brad Lidge certainly can't be used right now, so if you're in desperate need of saves Madson is worth a flier for the final week.
 Brad Lidge-R - Phillies Sep. 26 - 8:38 am et

The Phillies will enter an 'experimental' stage to find their next closer.
Brad Lidge simply isn't cutting it this point, having blown 11 saves. Setup man Ryan Madson has also struggled in crunch-time, leaving the injured Brett Myers as Manuel's preferred choice. Until Myers comes off the disabled list, however, Lidge should gain a couple more save opportunities. It's not a good situation to be in this late for the defending World Series champions.

 Brett Myers-S - Phillies Sep. 18 - 9:23 am et

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel has expressed a lack of confidence in Brett Myers' ability to close games.
"Watching him the three or four times we've run him out there, he's not quite ready" to be a closer, Manuel said. It's more of a physical issue than anything. Myers had hip surgery only a few months ago and still feels routine soreness. The job currently belongs to Ryan Madson and is likely to fall back to Brad Lidge once the playoffs roll around.
