Mariners claimed RHP Yusmeiro Petit off waivers from the Diamondbacks.

Petit, who has a 49.5% career flyball rate and allows 1.96 home runs per nine innings (tied for the worst in major league history), was a horrendous fit at Chase Field, but he should find some more success at the spacious Safeco Field. The 24-year-old right-hander has a 5.57 career ERA over parts of four seasons in the majors. Petit went 3-10 with a 5.82 ERA in 23 appearances (17 starts) with the Diamondbacks in 2009. Mariners fans shouldn't expect much here, but he's another back end of the rotation option.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that Yusmeiro Petit and Doug Slaten have been claimed off waivers.

There won't be an official announcement until after the World Series, of course, but according to Piecoro, Petit was claimed by the Mariners while Slaten was claimed by the Nationals. Petit, 24, went 3-10 with a 5.82 ERA in 23 appearances (17 starts) this season. Safeco Field should be a better fit for his historically extreme flyball tendencies. After being a significant contributor for the Diamondbacks from 2007-2008, Slaten appeared in just 11 games in the majors in 2009, posting a 7.11 ERA and 1.74 WHIP. He was 3-2 with a 3.09 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 39 appearances with Triple-A Reno. It's a low-risk pickup by the Nats.

Yusmeiro Petit blanked the Giants over six innings as the Diamondbacks notched a 11-0 victory on Thursday night.

Petit allowed four hits and to walks while striking out five in the strong outing. It was the third time in his past six starts that Petit hasn't allowed a run; unfortunately, when he's bad he tends to be really bad. He is not recommended in his upcoming road start against the Dodgers.

Yusmeiro Petit allowed one run over six innings in a tough-luck 1-0 loss to the Astros on Friday night.

The only run scored on a Jeff Keppinger double in the fifth inning. After back-to-back poor starts, Petit rebounded to allow just four hits against four strikeouts and two walks. He's an intriguing pitcher in NL-only leagues, but his extreme flyball tendencies will always make his success tenuous at best.

Yusmerio Petit was knocked around for seven runs in four innings against the Dodgers on Sunday.

Petit didn't walk a batter and struck out four, but he did give up three homers in the contest. After surrendering no runs in 14 innings against the Phillies and Pirates, Petit has since given up 10 earned runs in eight innings against the Dodgers and Nationals.

Yusmeiro Petit took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a 6-0 win over the Pirates on Tuesday night.

Surprise, surprise. Petit held the Pirates hitless over the first seven innings before Ronny Cedeno lined a single to left field with no outs in the eighth -- it was the only hit he would allow. He finished the night with four strikeouts against three walks. Petit has now put together three solid starts in a row. He merits watching against the Nationals next time out.
