Accoring to managing general partner Ken Kendrick, the Diamondbacks' payroll will likely increase north of $75 million for 2010.
General manager Josh Byrnes began the offseason with roughly $20 million to spend, but after picking up the $8.5 million option for Brandon Webb, the club will have less room to work with. "We definitely have more than $10 million to spend in the market," Kendrick said. "There are other moves that we may make that could change the money landscape that have yet to be determined." Of course, their flexibility may change depending on whether they will be able to find a taker for Chris Snyder or Eric Byrnes, but the Diamondbacks are expected to look for a No. 4 starter, a set-up man and a veteran position player. Arizona's payroll was approximately $73 million in 2009.

 Brandon Webb-S - Diamondbacks Nov. 11 - 10:56 pm et

For the first time since shoulder surgery in August, Brandon Webb threw for 15 minutes off flat ground on Wednesday.
"No problems and no pain," Webb said. "I was very encouraged." After much debate, the Diamondbacks picked up Webb's $8.5 million option for 2010. He's expected to be ready for spring training, but it remains to be seen what kind of stuff he'll have.

Diamondbacks exercised RHP Brandon Webb's $8.5 million option for 2010.
Initially the Diamondbacks were said to be leaning against exercising the option, but once Webb made it clear that he was unwilling to negotiate a new contract it was either an $8.5 million risk or free agency. When healthy Webb is obviously worth far more than that, but he made just one start this season because of shoulder problems and is no sure thing to be his usual self following surgery.

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Diamondbacks "are planning to pick up Brandon Webb's $8.5 million option" for 2010.
Webb made it very clear that he wasn't interested in negotiating a new deal, so the Diamondbacks had to either exercise the option or take their chances retaining him on the open market. Arizona has until five days after the World Series to make their decision official.

The Diamondbacks told Brandon Webb Friday that they fully intend to pick up his $8.5 million option for 2010.
Webb had a meeting with GM Josh Byrnes and assistant Peter Woodfork at Chase Field earlier this week to discuss the option. The D'Backs were probably hoping to see him throw before signing off on the extension, but the right-hander underwent surgery on his shoulder in early August and won't be cleared to resume baseball activities until mid-November. The option has to be exercised five days after the World Series concludes.

Brandon Webb remains uninterested in talking about a deal with the Diamondbacks beyond his 2010 option, according to Nick Piecoro at the Arizona Republic.
Webb met with D'Backs GM Josh Byrnes for a "check-in" meeting, where Webb apparently reiterated that it "doesn't make sense" for him to talk about something beyond his 2010 option for $8.5MM. Still, Webb hasn't ruled out staying with the team. It's speculated that the team may want to add a 2011 option in a deal. The Diamondbacks have until five days after the World Series to make a final decision, and it appears very possible Webb will return to the team in 2010.
