John Smoltz will not make his scheduled start against the Marlins on Monday due to shoulder tendinitis.
Smoltz is expected to miss just one start, with Todd Wellemeyer taking his turn in the rotation. Smoltz is 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in four starts since joining the Cardinals.

Cardinals activated RHP Todd Wellemeyer off the 15-day disabled list.
Wellemeyer (elbow) will be used in long relief and mop-up duties. The impending free agent could pick up a couple starts the rest of the way, but shouldn't be considered a fantasy option.

The Cardinals are expected to activate Todd Wellemeyer (elbow) from the disabled list on Friday.
Wellemeyer gave up just one hit over 1 1/3 frames Wednesday in his second rehab appearance with Triple-A Memphis. "I heard he threw the ball well," said manager Tony La Russa. "We'll give him a day or so to rest and then put him in the bullpen." Welle will be used in long relief and mop-up duties.

Todd Wellemeyer (elbow) was shelled for four earned runs over just 2/3 of an inning Monday in a rehab start with Triple-A Memphis.
Wellemeyer was hoping to return to the Cardinals after just one rehab outing, but that obviously won't happen. In fact, he's probably not in the club's plans for September and could be left off the postseason roster. The impending free agent will have trouble drawing interest from clubs this winter.

Todd Wellemeyer (elbow) will pitch out of the bullpen Monday and Wednesday for Triple-A Memphis.
The Cardinals will only need a fifth starter a couple times in September, so Wellemeyer expects to be a reliever the rest of the way. "They haven’t said anything about it, but I know how the game works," the right-hander noted Saturday. He will throw about 30 pitches in each stint and then could be activated.

Todd Wellemeyer (elbow) tossed his second bullpen session Friday.
Wellemeyer reported no pain or discomfort in his elbow and is in line to begin a rehab assignment next week. The right-hander has been sidelined since August 11 with right elbow inflammation.
