Tigers signed RHP Jose Valverde to a two-year, $14 million contract with a $9 million option for 2012.
We typically frown upon handing large sums of money to relief pitchers who happen to tally saves, but the Tigers desperately needed the bullpen help. Valverde, 31, posted a 2.33 ERA and 1.13 WHIP last season while converting 25 of 29 save opportunities and should do well in the ninth inning this year for Detroit. He can be selected with confidence in drafts this spring.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that reliever Jose Valverde has signed a two-year, $14 million contract with the Tigers.
The new contract reportedly includes an option for a third year at $9 million. The Tigers considered going with some combination of Joel Zumaya, Ryan Perry and Daniel Schlereth in the closer role, but they actually upgrade from Fernando Rodney here. Likewise, Valverde actually managed to do quite well for himself, given that the Tigers were the only realistic possibility for him to close. Because Valverde was a Type A free agent, the Tigers will surrender their first-round pick (19th).

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals are "not actively involved" on free agent reliever Jose Valverde.
This contradicts earlier reports which suggested that the Cardinals have not only emerged as a suitor, but even tendered an offer to the 31-year-old reliever. Strauss was told by a club source that "there's no money" to afford Valverde, who was pushing for $8 million per season as recently as last week.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Cardinals have made an offer for free agent reliever Jose Valverde.
Well that didn't take long. It's not clear how this would affect incumbent closer Ryan Franklin, but Valverde is the best reliever remaining on the free agent. Valverde, 31, posted a 2.33 ERA and 1.13 WHIP last season while converting 25 of 29 save opportunities. Because Valverde is a Type A free agent, it would cost the Cardinals their first-round pick.

A source told Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com that the Cardinals could emerge as a suitor for free agent reliever Jose Valverde.
The Tigers are believed to have the highest offer out for Valverde, but the two sides aren't yet close to an agreement. The Cardinals may come as a surprise since Ryan Franklin saved 38 games while posting a 1.92 ERA last season, but consider that he shrunk to a 3.33 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and four blown saves after the All-Star break. His job might not be as safe as you think.

SI.com's Jon Heyman confirmed Wednesday that the Tigers "are still talking to" free agent closer Jose Valverde.
The Tigers have a wide open ninth-inning gig primed for Valverde's taking, but his demands are still a little too high. The 31-year-old posted a 2.33 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and converted 25 saves in 29 opportunities last season. He saved 44 games in 2008 and racked up a career-high 47 saves in '07.
