Miguel Cabrera revealed on Thursday that he has spent three months undergoing alcohol abuse treatment with a doctor in Miami.
"When you've got problems," said Cabrera, "you can't hide." Cabrera, who turns 27 in April, hasn't had a drink since counseling began last fall. Everything went completely off course during the season's final weekend, as he was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife following an alcohol-fueled night in Chicago. He batted 324/.396/.547 with 34 homers and 103 RBI last season, even garnering a first-place MVP vote. It obviously wasn't warranted, but he remains one of the most talented hitters in the sport if he can keep his head on straight.

According to manager Jim Leyland, the Tigers will not have a fire sale.
"You can stop right there," Leyland told a reporter. "All they are is rumors. We've assured everyone of this: Anyone who thinks the Detroit Tigers are having a fire sale is foolish. Because we're not. I can assure you of that and I'll leave it at that. Anything else you have you should direct to the general manager." If this is true, Red Sox fans can stop dreaming about Miguel Cabrera. Edwin Jackson and Curtis Granderson have also been rumored as trade bait all offseason.

Two people with knowledge of the Tigers' plans heading in the winter meetings downplayed the chances of Miguel Cabrera getting traded within the next week, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com.
According to one of the sources, the chances of a trade are "pretty remote." That doesn't mean the Tigers aren't listening to offers for the 26-year-old. According to Morosi, the team is considering trading him in part because he is owed $126 million through 2015, but also because of their frustration over his late-season drinking incident. Said one source, dealing Cabrera "would solve a lot of problems," enabling the Tigers to keep Edwin Jackson and center fielder Curtis Granderson. That being said, trading Cabrera could send the wrong message to Justin Verlander, who is set to be a free agent after 2011.

According to Lynn Henning of the Detroit News, Miguel Cabrera might be as available as any other Tigers player this winter.
The Tigers need to cut payroll and are shopping all of their superstars this offseason. Cabrera is by far the most talented played in Detroit, but he'll also command the largest (and most talented) chunk of prospects. The 26-year-old hit .324/.396/.547 in 2009 with 34 homers, 34 doubles and 103 RBI. He finished fourth in this year's American League MVP voting.

Joe Mauer was named the American League's Most Valuable Player.
This was a no-brainer. Mauer easily beat Yankee teammates Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter, who finished second and third, respectively. The Twins star was a near-unanimous winner, receiving 27 of 28 first-place votes. The lone dissenter gave his first-place vote to fourth-place finisher Miguel Cabrera. Mauer led the league in batting average (.365), on-base percentage (.444), and slugging percentage (.587); a feat never before accomplished by a catcher. He also led the league by a substantial margin in Value over Replacement Player (VORP). Oh, and he played Gold Glove defense at a premium position.

Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse reports that first base coach Andy Van Slyke will not return in 2010.
Van Slyke, who has been the team's first base coach since 2006, has decided to pursue other opportunities. The other five coaches will remain on Jim Leyland's staff.
