| Rich Harden's 2009 Profile | | Baseball’s most effective starting pitcher in 2008 wasn’t named Tim Lincecum, CC Sabathia or Cliff Lee. Harden had a 2.07 ERA and lost just two of his 25 starts. Of course, he wouldn’t have qualified for the ERA title even if he hadn’t switched leagues at midseason. Harden was especially dominant after joining the Cubs, striking out 89 and allowing just 39 hits in 71 innings. If Harden could somehow pitch 200 innings in a season, there’s a good chance he’d be the game’s most valuable pitcher. However, his career high is 189 2/3 innings and last year’s 148 was his second-best total. He pitched 82 1/3 innings the previous two years combined. Harden’s lone DL stint last season was the result of a strained back, but his always tricky shoulder did remain an issue. Even though it didn’t show up in the results, his velocity steadily declined at the end of last season, and the Cubs gave him a thorough physical before deciding to pick up his $7 million option for 2009. With his price tag likely to be at least twice as high as it was last year, caution is strongly recommended.Updated Jul. 10: Rich Harden gave up four runs in five innings, walking four and whiffing six in a loss to the Cardinals Friday. Harden followed up a stinker against the Brewers with this outing, raising his ERA to 5.47. He gave the Cardinals the lead right back in the fifth after Derrek Lee tied the game up in the fourth.
