The Red Sox and RHP Jonathan Papelbon avoided arbitration on Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $9.35 million contract.
It could go up to $9.5 million with incentives. Papelbon has wanted to set the bar for relievers, and he has certainly done it in this respect, reaching the highest salary for a closer with four years of service time. Francisco Rodriguez still holds the record for any closer with $10 million in 2008. Papelbon, 29, has a 1.84 ERA and 0.98 WHIP over his first 268 major league appearances.

Rob Bradford of WEEI.com hears that the Red Sox "may have" a one-year deal in place with Jonathan Pabelbon "in the neighborhood" of $9 million.
Bradford reports that the parameters of the deal evidently were reached just prior to today's deadline for the two sides to exchange arbitration figures, similar to last year when Papelbon signed a record $6.25 million contract. If he signs at the reported salary of $9 million, the 29-year-old right-hander would become the highest paid closer with four years of service time, jumping Eric Gagne’s old mark of $8 million.

Jonathan Papelbon is willing to continue to going year to year in salary arbitration until he hits free agency after 2011.
"Understand, I'm in the prime of my career. Why would I give up something?," Papelbon told Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com. "I'd give up something if it's fair to both sides, but I want to do things for my fellow closers, just like Mo paved the way for me. I want every closer out there, man, to get every penny they deserve." Papelbon set a record for arbitration-eligible pitchers with a $6.25 million salary in '09 and should top $9 million this year. Papelbon hasn't ruled out the possibility of a multi-year deal, but hasn't had any negotiations with the Red Sox this winter.

 Daniel Bard-R - Red Sox Oct. 22 - 9:39 am et

General manager Theo Epstein said the Red Sox won't rush Daniel Bard into the closer role.
"I think he has the physical ability to do that and I think we saw as he developed over the course of the year he has the mental make-up to do that as well," said Epstein. "...This is somebody who is still really a work in progress and while he may have the ability to do something it might not be the best thing for the long-term and his career if we force him into something." The 24-year-old right-hander posted a 3.65 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 63/22 K/BB ratio in 49 1/3 innings in his rookie season. Jonathan Papelbon certainly showed some warning signs in 2009, capped by his miserable performance in Game 3 of the ALDS, however if it is unclear whether the Red Sox will explore trading him.

 Jonathan Papelbon-R - Red Sox Oct. 11 - 4:08 pm et

Jonathan Papelbon gave up three runs and four hits between the eighth and ninth innings to blow Sunday's game against the Angels.
Papelbon came in with two outs and runners on second and third in a 5-2 game in the eighth and promptly allowed a two-run single, making it 5-4. The Red Sox added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to again give their closer some margin for error. However, after two outs to begin the inning, Papelbon allowed a single to Erick Aybar, a walk to Chone Figgins and then an RBI double to Bobby Abreu. The Red Sox opted to intentionally walk Torii Hunter to bring up Vladimir Guerrero, and Papelbon blew it again, giving him a first-pitch fastball at the knees that he could easily handle. He lined it into center to give the Angels their first lead of the day.
 Jonathan Papelbon-R - Red Sox Sep. 18 - 10:09 pm et

Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 37th save in a win over the Orioles on Friday night.
It was his first action since coming down with tightness in his lower back on Wednesday. Papelbon is 37-for-40 in save opportunities this season, while putting up a 1.97 ERA.
