The Yankees and RHP Chad Gaudin avoided arbitration Monday by agreeing to a one-year, $2.95 million contract.
The Yankees flirted with the idea of trading Gaudin this offseason but probably didn't get much of an offer for him. The 26-year-old went 6-10 with a 4.64 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 31 appearances (25 starts) last season. He will be used as a long reliever and emergency sixth starter this year.

Manager Joe Girardi named CC Sabathia as his starter for Game 4 on Sunday.
It's a bold move by Girardi, as Sabathia will be starting on three day's rest, however it leaves open the possibility for him to start Game 7, if necessary. Girardi could have went with Chad Gaudin, although he remains a possibility for Game 5. Sabathia allowed two runs over seven innings in Game 1. Meanwhile, Phillies skipper Charlie Manuel hasn't yet wavered from starting Joe Blanton.

Yankees pitching coach Dave Eiland said Tuesday that the Yankees are "stretching out" Chad Gaudin to potentially start Game 5 of the World Series.
New York could go with a three-man rotation of CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte, but that would involve all three pitchers working on short rest and the team may only feel comfortable doing that with Sabathia. Gaudin would likely be limited to 80-90 pitches after spending the first two rounds as a reliever.

During a conference call with reporters on Tuesday, manager Joe Girardi said the Yankees are "definitely considering" going with a three-man rotation against the Angels in the ALCS.
This means that C.C. Sabathia would pitch Games 1, 4 and 7, if necessary. Sabathia would be pitching on short-rest in Game 4, but would have regular rest headed into a potential Game 7. If inclement weather puts a wrinkle in Girardi's plan, look for Chad Gaudin, not Joba Chamberlain, to be used as the team's fourth starter.

Chad Gaudin yielded two runs over 6 2/3 innings in a win over the Royals on Monday night.
Gaudin has struggled with high pitch counts since joining the Yankees rotation in the beginning of September, but tonight he was relatively efficient, recording 20 outs on 92 pitches. He allowed four hits and two walks against five strikeouts in the strong effort, and is scheduled to get one last turn against the Rays this weekend.

According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, manager Joe Girardi has tinkered his rotation for next week's series against the Royals.
Chad Gaudin will start the first game on Monday, with A.J. Burnett going on Tuesday and Joba Chamberlain starting on Wednesday. Girardi could start a fresh Burnett or Andy Pettitte in Game Two of the ALDS.
