Kevin Gregg said Wednesday that he wants to be a closer next season.
It won't happen in Chicago. Carlos Marmol was handed ninth-inning duties in August and obviously won't lose ground on the gig during the offseason. Gregg, an impending free agent, posted a 4.72 ERA and 1.31 WHIP this season and converted 23 saves in 30 chances.

 Kevin Gregg-R - Cubs Sep. 29 - 7:12 pm et

Kevin Gregg (rib) has been shut down for the rest of the season.
Gregg suffered a crack in his rib cartilage last week and there's no point in having him pitch through pain. He finishes the year with a 4.72 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 23 saves in 30 chances.

Kevin Gregg (rib) completed a successful side session on Saturday.
He'll see how his body responds on Sunday. Gregg has been bothered by a sore left ribcage. The former closer hasn't appeared in a game since Sept. 20.

Kevin Gregg will miss the weekend with inflammation in his left rib.
Gregg has been horrendous in September, so it's probably for the best. The 32-year old will hit free agency and could snap up a closing spot for a non-contending team if he really wants to.

 Carlos Marmol-R - Cubs Aug. 24 - 9:37 am et

Carlos Marmol collected his first save Sunday with the title of "Cubs closer."
Marmol tossed a 1-2-3 inning and capped it all off with a strikeout of Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez. ''It was good to see him in that role,'' manager Lou Piniella said Sunday. ''Good way to start.''

 Carlos Marmol-R - Cubs Aug. 18 - 8:35 pm et

Carlos Marmol is reportedly the new closer in Chicago.
Marmol alluded to this position change to the Chicago media. He walks way too many batters, but when he gets the ball over the plate, he is unhittable. For the Cubs to make the playoffs, they need a shutdown closer and Marmol is the best option.
