Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that right-hander Edwin Jackson and the Diamondbacks appear to be headed for an arbitration hearing.
There's currently a gulf between the two sides as Jackson filed at $6.25 million and the team offered $4.6 million when arbitration figures were exchanged last month. According to Piecoro, the Diamondbacks have approached Jackson about a two-year deal that would buy out his remaining arbitration years, but a hearing is still the most likely scenario. Needless to say, a hearing is not the best way to welcome a new acquisition into the fold.

Edwin Jackson requested $6.25 million from the Diamondbacks and was offered $4.6 million when arbitration figures were exchanged Tuesday.
Jackson was acquired by Arizona this December. He was on top of most major league leaderboards through the first half of the season but eventually settled on a 13-9 record, 3.62 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. He's likely to settle with the D'Backs somewhere in the middle of the filed figures.

Diamondbacks acquired RHPs Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy; Tigers acquired RHP Max Scherzer, LHPs Daniel Schlereth and Phil Coke and OF Austin Jackson; Yankees acquired OF Curtis Granderson.
Let the second-guessing continue. That's no slight on Jackson, because he is a fine talent. The 26-year-old right-hander was 13-9 with a 3.62 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with the Tigers in 2009 and was one of the best pitchers in the majors for over three-quarters of the season. The real question is why the Diamondbacks would take on someone who is only under team control for two more seasons when they could have kept the cheaper, younger Max Scherzer for far longer. If Brandon Webb is healthy, the Diamondbacks will have a formidable front end of their rotation in 2010, but it will likely only be for a fleeting moment.

According to AOL's Jeff Fletcher, the Mets are interested in Tigers right-hander Edwin Jackson "but can't get the pieces to fit."
In other words, the Mets either don't have the kind of prospects the Tigers are looking for, or don't want to surrender them. Jackson has been linked recently to the Yankees and Diamondbacks. He's clearly on the trading block, but the asking price has been termed recently as "very, very high."

According to FOXSports.com, the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Tigers have discussed a blockbuster trade at this week's winter meetings.
Ken Rosenthal says "talks are at an impasse," but here's the breakdown: The Yankees would receive Curtis Granderson from the Tigers and two prospects from the D'Backs. The Tigers would get Max Scherzer from the Diamondbacks, with center fielder Austin Jackson and left-handed relievers Phil Coke and Michael Dunn also coming over from the Yankees. Arizona would get Edwin Jackson from the Tigers and Ian Kennedy from the Yanks. The deal is reportedly being "pushed by the Diamondbacks."

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic has heard that the Diamondbacks may be willing to part with Max Scherzer for Tigers right-hander Edwin Jackson.
It's doubtful this would work as a straight-up deal. Scherzer was selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2006 draft and posted a 4.12 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 9.19 K/9 this past season as a 25-year-old. He's just as talented as Jackson, if not more, and will make the league minimum for the next two years.
