The Rangers have shown interest in Dioner Navarro of the Rays, reports Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas.com.
With the uncertainty of Jarrod Saltalamacchia's shoulder and Taylor Teagarden's ability to be an everyday player in doubt, general manager Jon Daniels is looking at all possible avenues to upgrade the catcher position. They'd prefer to bring in a veteran via free agency, but the best available options are all believed to be seeking multi-year contracts. One advantage with Navarro is that he would come relatively cheaply -- $2.1 million in 2010 -- without the promise of a future contract should Saltalamacchia bounce back without a hitch. Navarro, 25, is coming off a down-year in which he hit .218/.261/.322 with eight home runs and 32 RBI.

 Dioner Navarro-C - Rays Dec. 12 - 10:59 pm et

Rays agreed to terms with catcher Dioner Navarro on a one-year, $2.1 million contract.
Here's quite a surprise. Navarro opted to settle for the exact same salary he received last season in order to avoid being non-tendered. Even though it was an extremely disappointing 2009 campaign, he might have been able to do better elsewhere and face less competition for playing time. The Rays are going to be paying Kelly Shoppach more than Navarro, so he might have the early edge when it comes to at-bats. Of course, it's still possible that the Rays could go ahead and trade Navarro to a team that would like him as a starter.

Tracy Ringolsby of FOXSports.com has confirmed that the Rays are shopping catcher Dioner Navarro at this week's Winter Meetings.
The Rays will either get rid of Navarro via trade, according to Ringolsby, or they will non-tender him later this week. Tampa management is apparently satisfied with using Kelly Shoppach as the club's 2010 starting catcher. Navarro, 25, should find a home somewhere. He hit a lousy .218/.261/.322 this past season but is only a year removed from a .295/.349/.407 batting line.

Rays manager Joe Maddon suggested Friday that Dioner Navarro and new catcher Kelly Shoppach may split time behind the plate in 2010.
"I think it can be kind of a really great combination, actually," said Maddon. "Those are two pretty good catchers right there." Rumors have been floated this offseason indicating that the Rays may non-tender Navarro or try trade him, but perhaps a platoon could work. Navarro is a switch-hitter and could start against right-handers, while Shoppach, a right-handed hitter, could play against lefties. Shoppach hit .304/.420/.625 against southpaws in 2009.

The Rays revealed Monday that catcher Dioner Navarro underwent surgery on his left elbow in late October.
The procedure was of the minor variety and Navarro is expected to be fine by the start of spring training. He hit just .218/.261/.322 with eight homers and 32 RBI in a disappointing 2009 campaign.

Dioner Navarro (head, face) practiced with his teammates Thursday afternoon and declared himself ready to play.
Navarro took a foul tip to the facemask last Saturday night. "I feel pretty pretty good," he said. "A little sore on my jaw, but that’s about it." The Rays return to action Friday night in Kansas City.
