The Mariners and first baseman Casey Kotchman avoided arbitration on Wednesday by agreeing to a one-year, $3,517,500 million contract.
Kotchman asked for $3.9 million and was offered $3.135 million from the Mariners when arbitration figures were exchanged last month, so the two sides ended up splitting the difference. Kotchman, 27, was acquired from the Red Sox for Bill Hall in January. He batted .268/.339/.382 with seven home runs and 48 RBI with the Braves and Red Sox last season and figures to share first-base duties with Ryan Garko this season.

 Orlando Hudson-2B - Twins Feb. 2 - 8:53 am et

The Mariners "remain a long-shot candidate" to sign free agent second baseman Orlando Hudson, according to FOXSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi.
We've heard rumblings of an interested mystery American League team, so it seems this rumor could have some legs. That said, Hudson doesn't exactly fit in Seattle, where Jose Lopez mans second base and Casey Kotchman is expected to man first. The M's would probably have to move one of the two in order to spin a deal, unless the "O-Dog" is fine with a backup role.

Casey Kotchman asked for $3.9 million and was offered $3.135 million from the Mariners when arbitration figures were exchanged Tuesday.
The M's traded utilityman Bill Hall for Kotchman earlier this month and will start him at first base in 2010. The 27-year-old left-hander hit .268/.339/.382 between Atlanta and Boston last season.

 Mike Carp-1B - Mariners Jan. 7 - 9:56 pm et

Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik said Thursday that Mike Carp should still have an impact in 2010 despite the arrival of Casey Kotchman.
The 23-year-old first base prospect hit .315 in the 25 games he was in the big leagues last season and batted .271/.372/.446 with 15 homers and 64 RBI in 110 games at Triple-A Tacoma. Kotchman will start at first base, but perhaps Carp can find time at DH or as a pinch-hitter. "Mike Carp could be an integral part of this club," Zduriencik said. "My experience tells me you can never have enough. Nobody is shutting the door on Mike. The door's wide open."

 Casey Kotchman-1B - Mariners Jan. 7 - 5:58 pm et

Mariners acquired first baseman Casey Kotchman from the Red Sox for infielder-outfielder Bill Hall and a player to be named later.
Kotchman was never a good fit in Boston, batting just .218/.284/.287 in 87 at-bats after coming over from the Braves last July. He'll only be 27 years old this season, but he hasn't posted an OPS north of 800 since 2007 and continues to hit groundballs at an alarming rate (51.4 percent). On the plus side, he's a strong contributor with the glove and offers fine plate discipline.

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times reports that Casey Kotchman will undergo a physical with the Mariners on Wednesday.
Kotchman will travel from Tampa to Seattle in the morning. There's a few moving parts at work here, as Adrian Beltre isn't scheduled to undergo his physical with the Red Sox until Thursday, so the trade for Kotchman might not be made official until Thursday or Friday, according to Baker. Bill Hall is expected to be traded to Boston as part of the deal.
