Brad Ziegler was taken for chest X-rays Sunday after a bout with the flu and asthma this past week.
A's team doctors want to make sure he doesn't have pneumonia. He's currently taking five medications and predicted that he won't be back to full strength for another 10 days. Look for the A's to place him on the disabled list fairly soon if the X-rays show anything suspicious. Oakland is likely to employ a committee of closers while he's out, but Andrew Bailey got the nod Saturday.

 Andrew Bailey-R - Athletics May. 9 - 1:18 am et

Andrew Bailey picked up his first save after throwing two perfect innings in Oakland's 5-3 win over Toronto on Friday.
We doubt that the original plan was for Bailey to pitch two innings, but it's possible Brad Ziegler had an issue in the bullpen or that he was just so good in the eighth that the A's thought leaving him in for the ninth was the right move. He's been Oakland's best reliever all year long, and he needed just 20 pitches to get his six outs tonight. He's likely in line for more save chances.

Brad Ziegler struck out two in a perfect inning of relief Tuesday against the Angels.
It was his first appearance since coming down with flu-like symptoms last week. The A's were behind by four when he entered tonight, but he needed the work.

Brad Ziegler is sidelined with flu-like symptoms.
Ziegler contracted the illness last week and hasn't stepped on the mound since April 25. He has posted a 1.74 ERA and four saves in 10 1/3 innings this season.

 Brad Ziegler-R - Athletics Apr. 30 - 1:30 pm et

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Brad Ziegler was expected to report late to the ballpark for Thursday's game against Texas due to a "non-baseball-related condition."
This usually means an illness. Ziegler could miss Thursday's game.

 Joey Devine-R - Athletics Apr. 21 - 5:52 pm et

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Joey Devine had surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow Tuesday and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
Specific details of the surgery have yet to be provided, but it appears to be safe to cut Devine loose in AL-only leagues. With Devine definitively out of the picture for 2009, Brad Ziegler has a solid chance to remain Oakland's closer all season.
