Nationals reassigned catcher Javier Valentin, infielder Jose Castillo and outfielder Corey Patterson to minor league camp.
The Nats weren't going to make Valentin their true backup catcher, and they didn't think it was worth carrying him as a third catcher/pinch-hitter. He'll become a free agent. Castillo hit .387/.406/.452 in 31 at-bats, but there was no room for him on the bench. Patterson was a complete bust this month, going 5-for-40 with an 11/0 K/BB ratio.

Jose Castillo is expected to miss two games after suffering a shoulder strain Saturday.
Castillo is hoping to make the Nationals as a utility infielder. "It's going to be a couple of days before he can swing a bat," Nationals manager Manny Acta said. "He really jammed his shoulder when he hit the ground, but the shoulder is not dislocated."
