Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox have expressed interest in four of Scott Boras' clients -- Matt Holliday, Mike Gonzalez, Rick Ankiel and Adrian Beltre.
The Red Sox are looking at Holliday as a more expensive alternative should they fail to re-sign Jason Bay. Gonzalez, a left-hander, could presumably take the role of Billy Wagner if he signs as a closer elsewhere. Ankiel is a surprising name, but since they just acquired Jeremy Hermida, also a left-handed outfielder, it's hard to see a fit. Lastly, Beltre would only make sense if the Red Sox find a suitor for Mike Lowell, who has one year and $12 million left on his contract. It's important to understand that this is just the first day of free-agency, so look for the Red Sox to be linked to most, or all, of the major free agents.

Giants GM Brian Sabean said Thursday that he has not contacted the agents representing big ticket outfielders Matt Holliday or Jason Bay.
Sabean doesn't believe Holliday or Bay realistically want to come to San Francisco and said he won't be a "stalking horse" this winter for the players' agents. The Giants are looking at "second-tier" free agents this offseason with a desire to bolster their batting order and bullpen.

Angels owner Arte Moreno has ruled out signing Matt Holliday, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com.
Moreno reportedly made the declaration at the annual owners' meetings on Thursday. While Holliday's asking price may be too high, Moreno would consider signing Jason Bay if the club is unable to retain John Lackey, Chone Figgins and Vladimir Guerrero. Moreno acknowledged that the club can't likely to afford to keep all three.

According to FOXSports.com, Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III is optimistic about free agent Matt Holliday.
"Like any club, you have to set your budget and make sure you live within it," DeWitt said in a telephone interview with FOXSports.com. "As it relates to Matt, we have an internal sense of what we can do. Hopefully, he'll view that as enough." "The process has to play itself out," he continued. "There's no point in getting into the posturing that seems to be going on out there a little. We're trying to keep him. We love Matt. We're trying to get him signed. If not, we'll move on to a Plan B." Holliday officially hits the open market at 12:01 am on Friday.

Angels general manager Tony Reagins said Monday that he's not currently pursuing free agent outfielder Matt Holliday.
"He's a talented player," Reagins said of the 29-year-old Holliday. "But our focus is not on him right now." The Angels are hoping to attract John Lackey and Chone Figgins back to Anaheim and will attempt to re-sign both before trying for a big-money free agent bat. As of this moment, Holliday's openly interested suitors are the Red Sox, Mets and Cardinals.

The Yankees are not interested in signing Matt Holliday, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.
Writes Olney, via Twitter: "They'll talk to Boras to keep other bidders honest, but corner outfield not a priority for them." This is no surprise, as the Yankees did their high-end shopping last offseason. Still, it's a sage strategy by the defending champs to keep Scott Boras on speed dial to ensure one of their competitors has to pay through the nose for Holliday.
