 | | | | | | | Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox have expressed interest in four of Scott Boras' clients -- Matt Holliday, Mike Gonzalez, Rick Ankiel and Adrian Beltre.
The Red Sox are looking at Holliday as a more expensive alternative should they fail to re-sign Jason Bay. Gonzalez, a left-hander, could presumably take the role of Billy Wagner if he signs as a closer elsewhere. Ankiel is a surprising name, but since they just acquired Jeremy Hermida, also a left-handed outfielder, it's hard to see a fit. Lastly, Beltre would only make sense if the Red Sox find a suitor for Mike Lowell, who has one year and $12 million left on his contract. It's important to understand that this is just the first day of free-agency, so look for the Red Sox to be linked to most, or all, of the major free agents. | | | | | | | |

| Matt Holliday's 2009 Profile | | There's plenty of room for debate about how valuable Holliday was over the past couple seasons, because opinions on his defense vary wildly and Rockies fans bristled at the notion of Coors Field being largely responsible for his MVP votes. However, there's no arguing the fact that during Holliday's time in Colorado he batted .357 with a 1068 OPS at home compared to .280 with an 803 OPS on the road. Traded to the A's during the offseason, Holliday now goes from Planet Coors to the decidedly difficult hitting environment in Oakland, where spacious foul territory replaces mile-high air. Holliday isn't exactly Dante Bichette, but there's almost no way for him to avoid a major decline in raw production and his upside goes from .350-40-140 to something like .300-30-110. Toss in the likelihood that the station-to-station A's won't let him attempt 30 steals and it'd be smart to let someone else pay a premium to find out how he'll fare outside of Colorado.Updated Jun. 27: According to multiple sources, the Cardinals are actively pursuing a trade for Matt Holliday. They nearly acquired him from the Rockies in the offseason but ultimately balked at the deal. Now the heat is on again as the Cardinals look for another powerful bat in their lineup. | | Year | Tm | AB | H | AVG | HR | RBI | RUNS | SB | OBP | SLUG | TB | OPS | | Proj | STL | 585 | 172 | .294 | 28 | 109 | 99 | 13 | .386 | .518 | 303 | .904 | | 2008 | COL | 539 | 173 | .321 | 25 | 88 | 107 | 28 | .409 | .538 | 290 | .947 | | 2007 | COL | 636 | 216 | .340 | 36 | 137 | 120 | 11 | .405 | .607 | 386 | 1.012 | | 2006 | COL | 602 | 196 | .326 | 34 | 114 | 119 | 10 | .387 | .586 | 353 | .973 |
