Brad Hawpe is open to the idea of playing some first base next season, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post.
"He’s a legitimate alternative," said Rockies general manager Dan O’Dowd. Hawpe carries the reputation as a below-average outfielder and UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating) certainly bears that out, however Hawpe played first base at LSU and in the minor leagues. Spelling Todd Helton at first base here and there could provide additional playing time for Seth Smith, Eric Young Jr. and Ryan Spilborghs.

 Brad Hawpe-OF - Rockies Oct. 19 - 9:06 am et

General manager Dan O'Dowd said that the Rockies don't plan to trade Brad Hawpe.
"The Rockies understand the value of Brad Hawpe on the field and off," said O'Dowd. "We have no desire to move him at all. He has leadership ability and a commitment to the approach we feel is important for a team's success." Hawpe is locked in at a reasonable $7.5 million for 2010, so there is no pressure to move him financially, however Jim Tracy soured on him down the stretch, often benching him against left-handed pitching. Hawpe was limited to just four at-bats during the NLDS against the Phillies. On a broader scale, the Rockies have cheaper and more dynamic options like Dexter Fowler, Seth Smith and Carlos Gonzalez competing for playing time in the outfield.

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post reports that Brad Hawpe is a candidate to be traded during the offseason.
Hawpe batted .320/.396/.577 in the first-half, earning his first All-Star nod, but he hit just .240 with 82 strikeouts in 217 at-bats after the break, often finding himself benched against left-handed pitching. He was limited to just four at-bats during the NLDS. With the emergence of Carlos Gonzalez, Dexter Fowler and Seth Smith, general manager Dan O'Dowd will likely attempt to find a suitor for his $7.5 million contract next season. The 30-year-old outfielder has a $10 million option for 2011 that can be voided if he is traded.

 Seth Smith-OF - Rockies Oct. 12 - 2:48 pm et

Seth Smith is in the starting lineup Monday against the Phillies.
He is batting seventh. Brad Hawpe has started only one game in the series and will be on the bench again with the Rockies' season hanging in the balance. "You are in situation where you have to put the lineup that feels like puts you in best position to score runs," manager Jim Tracy said. "And if happen to be in a valley, you are not going to be in there."

 Brad Hawpe-OF - Rockies Oct. 7 - 5:27 pm et

Brad Hawpe went 0-for-3 and committed an error in the loss to the Phillies on Wednesday.
He was also slow in getting over to back up Jayson Werth's high fly to left-center that bounced high off the wall and ricocheted back to center. Fortunately for Hawpe, Werth stared at it as it left his bat on the windy day and missed out on the inside-the-park homer as a result. The Rockies would have been better off with Ryan Spilborghs in right field today, and they'll be better off again with that alignment against Cole Hamels on Friday.
 Brad Hawpe-OF - Rockies Sep. 26 - 11:23 pm et

Brad Hawpe went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer Saturday night in a losing effort against the Cardinals.
Hawpe entered the contest with a .146 batting average in the month of September, so it was a major relief to see him go yard. His two-run blast tied the game in the fourth inning, but the Cardinals were able to rally back and capture the National League Central crown.
