Padres released RHP Shawn Hill.
Hill made only three starts in 2009 before undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing the remainder of the year. The right-hander has shown promise at times but has never been healthy enough to throw 100 innings in a major-league season. He'll look to latch on with another club on a minor-league deal this winter.

The Padres announced that Shawn Hill underwent Tommy John surgery last Wednesday and is done for the season.
It took team doctors quite some time to figure out what was wrong with Hill's arm, but the Tommy John news is no surprise. Hill has been pitching through ongoing shoulder, elbow and forearm soreness since undergoing his first Tommy John surgery in 2004. The Padres will likely part ways with him this offseason.

Padres transferred RHP Shawn Hill to the 60-day disabled list.
Doctors still can't figure out what's wrong with the guy. He's visited some of the most prominent joint specialists in the nation, including Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Lewis Yocum, but still he has no official diagnosis for the discomfort in his elbow. Hill shouldn't be counted on this year.

Shawn Hill (elbow) threw a second bullpen session Wednesday.
Doctors have yet to officially diagnose Hill's elbow trouble, and these bullpen sessions have made it clear that he can't go on without treatment. "It's more when I'm done throwing, it'll start tightening up on me a little," said Hill. "Day after day after day, it catches up to me a little bit. Basically, we're just trying to keep up with it."

Shawn Hill (elbow) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Sunday.
Doctors are unable to diagnose Hill's elbow ailment, so he's just going to start throwing and see what happens. "Dr. Yocum reviewed my MRI and talked with Dr. Andrews," he said Wednesday. "I was told they didn't see anything. It's not just one person stumped by this. My wife (Ashley) has joked about calling TLC or the Discovery Channel and seeing if they'd be interested in doing this as a medical mystery."
